US govt disagrees with you. |

White and they worked to make sure of that because they did not want to be lumped in as West Asian. White was better.
Now that it's more beneficial to be labeled as something other than white and asian, the tide is turning to wanting a separate racial distinguisher. Not all white people are privileged, it's still okay to be white folks. You can be white and muslim, white and jewish, white and christian. Religion is not race. |
|
For purposes of census and college admissions etc, yes. Basically wherever there is a race check box.
Appearance varies a ton. Certainly after 9/11 when a lot of this group was targeted by racist attacks, no one viewed darker-skin middle easterners with ethnic names as "white" |
| I don’t consider Italians as white |
You're correct, but religion can overlap with ethnicity. For example, Judaism is a religion, while Jews are an ethnic group. Most Jews do not actually practice Judaism. In any event, what about the Muslims, Jews and Christians who are not Black, not "Asian" looking, and not white? Many people in this world really are brown. It depends on how you define white. Some people define it in terms of features, while others define it in terms of skin color. It really is kind of dumb to refer to brown-skinned people as white. "Caucasian" makes more sense, because what you're looking at is their facial features. |

Race is a social construct. At certain times in US history Jewish, Irish and Italians were not considered white but they are now. But some Italians are darker than Asians!
Middle Easterners usually check off Caucasian as Asians in the US are usually are falling into the South or East Asian category. |
There is an "other" option and a lot of people use it. |
+1. Greeks aren’t white either. |
?? They aren’t considered white right now. |
Working at a college, trust me that's what these groups check off when applying so clearly you don't work with any.... |
Oh come on- you’re trolling. Do you also not consider Irish to be white? |
Interesting. Neither do my parents, but they are super-old. Can I ask how old you are? I don't know other people my age (50s) or younger who feel this way. |
People from the Middle East are privileged and extremely rich, so they are definitely not people of color. Since they are not BIPOC, they are white. |
Okay, you are just trolling. You must know that that isn't the case for most Middle Easterners. |
