White Families Are Engines Of Inequality

The problem isn’t whites. The ‘wealthy’ DC neighborhood I live in has affluent people of all races.

The problem is income distribution that has grown ridiculously wide.

Culture is the problem. Until that changes, nothing changes.

Culture may or may not be a problem but income inequality is certainly much larger. Of course it cannot be addressed on an individual level, but that doesn't mean it cannot be addressed.

What level of income equality or inequality do you believe would be appropriate?

How did you arrive at that conclusion?

To what extent should an individual's efforts and talents (or lack thereof) have an impact on his or her level of wealth and income?

How do you propose to effectuate your vaguely-imagined socialist utopia?

It's as if the notion of income inequality and the instability that accompanies it is a novel concept to you. If so, read more.

You didn't answer any of the questions.

Stop thinking like a college sophmore on a 420 high in the dorm room at 3 a.m. and actually answer the questions--if you can.

If you don't know how "equal" you want incomes to be, or how you determined that, or how you will enforce that, or who will enforce it, to say nothing of unintended consequences--then you're no better than the author of this jealous rant (the entire article was motivated by her financial jealousy of another associate professor who was able to buy a brownstone because her parents had saved money and had life insurance and left it to her I guess. But they were both WHITE so how does "racism" have anything to do with anything?)

So, what's the cutoff? How equal is equal enough for you?

What about someone who is smarter than you, or works harder than you, or gets more accomplished than you? Or vice versa?

Should we all get paid $15.00 per hour? No matter how hard we work, or how little we work?

Maybe you are one of those socialists who has a fantasy of being able to sit on your rear all day and someone gives you a nice fat check?

Dream on.

If you haven't yet read this article, I recommend it to you. I think you'll find it helpful for understanding pp's point.

I understand the "point", such as it is, perfectly.

Socialism is the point. I get it, I really do.

But if that's what you want, you have to be more specific.

Exactly how much money/wealth/income do you propose to take away from white people, just because they are white, and transfer to minorities, just because they are minorities?

How do you specifically decide who pays what, and how much; and who gets what, and how much?

But I think we can all agree where to start: Let's separate Jeff Bezos from his hundred billion or so dollars, and distribute that particular hoard of white wealth any way you want to.

After you've managed to accomplish that, we can talk some more.

I am the first PP. No, I don't think socialism is the answer and I don't want it. I think our capitalist economy can be used for the benefit of everyone, not just shareholders. But currently it's not.

I am certainly not smart enough to figure out how to solve the problem. I'm sure you're much smarter than me, so you can put your starts to the problem m

The problem is: get a job.

I agree. This is exactly the problem, wage stagnation. What's the solution?

The solution is to work hard so that you are qualified for a better job. If your goal is to work as a cashier at McD for all of your career, it's going to be hard to earn a living wage. That is a starter job or a second income job. It's not intended to be a career.

Oh, I see. You don't know what wage stagnation means.

Nevermind.

Right. It's difficult to improve your situation when you have mouths to feed. So let's raise and fix wages for these jobs.

Thank you for posting this article, which discusses the provocative theory that the shareholder maximization orthodoxy that began in the 80's is to blame. I find it less convincing in the cases of Japan or Europe, but the theory still has a lot going for it.

People are too thoroughly immersed in reinforcing propaganda. The US society: buy stuff, the more stuff you have the more successful one is, study hard and work hard to "get ahead" to compete. If you cannot compete, you are worthless. -- What kind of society is this? A sick one.

This country is in big trouble. No one is questioning anything beyond the minimum wage, who is the president, and I don't know what else.

Maybe if you can’t support mouths to feed you shouldn’t have them. If you are limited in your earning potential and cannot support a family, don’t have a family.

But the reason that you are limited in your earning potential is not something that you created. It's a fault in our system. So we should fix it.
