how so ? |
It's a GS7 and it isn't especially diverse which indicates it's largely mediocre privileged kids. Point being is you'd be just as well off going there as pretty much ANY mcps high-school. |
It would be a good choice if the IB program was a good fit for your child. |
This is one of the cringiest threads I've ever read on this site. Please don't bring us into it. -VMES parent |
That is census data, keep reeling yourself you don’t live in a bubble |
Census data indicates relatively small differences in median household earnings but a huge difference in real estate values. This leads most sensible people to an obvious conclusion which seems to differ with your beliefs. |
Not even close to true and easy to check. Way to go trump Bethesda Is about 60% higher as a median income and about double per captia. Sure there are a couple neighborhoods a little closer in DTSS but most of the rest of them are actually further apart. Everything from education, wealth and crime is starkly inferior in SS. |
True, but pointing out a person's bad life choices usually results in hostility. |
I don't dispute that this is true. However, one factor that may be changing is that younger couples who are saddled with far more student loan debt have significantly less buying power that their previous peers. You may start to see young families with more education and similar paychecks being forced to live in places like Silver Spring. The overall wealth disparity will remain the same but the income levels may get closer. You'll still have the dynamic though that once the financially successful younger families pay off the student loans and can afford to move for better schools they'll leave Silver Spring or start paying for private school. |
The thread was never about SS which makes me suspect, but when I compare places like Kensington with Bethesda which is more on point there really is a marginal difference in income but huge disparity in housing costs which goes back to the earlier poster's point. |
Also fewer people will want to buy in areas like Bethesda since there are so many more interesting choices these days than there were a decade or two ago. |
I wouldn't go this far. The areas in Montgomery County are incredibly similar. DTSS is just like Rockville or Crown in Gaithersburg or even Bethesda and all the other places building little faux downtown areas. All variations on the same type of restaurants and shops, parking garages, farmers market ...rinse repeat, rinse repeat. The areas are just not that different or unique outside the level of crime and school quality which do vary widely. |
I think of it like this. When I was young the only places that were safe and interesting we're largely around Georgetown or DuPoint. Decades later places like Logan, Shaw, and even Petworth seem like better choices. If the metro area had a center of mass, it would have shifted eastward over the past two decades. Perhaps, it's hard for people to see this when they're in the middle of it, but it is, in fact, happening even in moco. With the skyrocketing costs of real estate, people are looking for better values and this often makes areas that you wouldn't have considered a decade ago a viable choice. |
Except that the reverse can also happen which is what is going on in Montgomery County. Wheaton and Silver Spring used to more middle class and while the school performance was never in the league of WJ or BCC it wasn't as bad as it is now. There has been a real drop in performance over the past 20 years in the eastern side of the county. |
You’re wrong. Many schools, like Wheaton, are better now than 20 years ago. Just because they're not majority white, doesn't make them bad. Your true color is showing btw. |
