Is all PTA volunteering like a pyramid scheme?

Anonymous
At all of my kids schools (2 ESs, 1 MS 1 HS, both in HS now) there have been no perks such as choosing teachers or classmates or ANYTHING. That is a Principal/school issue, NOT a PTA issue. Be mad at the Principal, or whoever is giving these favors, not the PTA who are volunteers spending time away from their kid(s) while doing an event for hundreds of other peoples kids.

Dont like the event? Don't attend. Despite the "relentless" volunteer requester, no one stopped you from saying no.

Have an idea for a better event? Suggest it and offer to chair it. That's how these things get started. If no one wants to run the event it doesn't happen. Clearly some people want the events that you don't like.

After skimming through this thread I'm dreading going back for the school year with these people

And after reading all of the whiners and mooches on this thread I'm just not going to do it at all this year. Screw you.

Room parents aren't needed.

it’s a lot of bored moms creating make-work.

This. So much ... is unnecessary and just a way for moms to stay busy

+1 I am a room parent and I completely agree.

+ So many whiners on this thread. They don't like what their PTA does, but are too lazy to open their mouth and try to change things. OP, I can't fathom why you would liken a PTA to a pyramid scheme, but I hope you find a way to harness your inner adult and express your opinions with more clarity and honesty.

To recap:

The PTA chair asked me to volunteer and now I feel guilty. How dare someone do this to me!

Wahhh, the same 5 parents always sign up for everything. *signs up for the first slot*

I volunteered but I didn’t get to do it the way I wanted, wahhh.

If I don’t volunteer for this, there is NOBODY in the entire school that can do it. Nobody.

Seriously, this thread is one long definition of first world problems. I say all the time that being a parent of kids in elementary school is like being in high school all over again. Fun times.

+1 And my favorite, "I didn't volunteer or express an opinion all year, but the PTA didn't magically read my mind and do the activities that I wanted."

At our school there is a room parent coordinator on the PTA and the room parent is supposed to be a liaison between the PTA and parents.

Our room parents are separate from PTA. No interaction.

PTA is a scam and your $ is being skimmed. Convert to HSA/PTO asap.

Plenty CAN do it. No one WILL do it. Lazy MFers.

Is that because you are one who volunteers for everything and those who do nothing complain about your helping their kid or because you do nothing and just like to complain about those who do?

PS - most school PTAs are nothing like what's on this thread. Most are helpful organizations with volunteers that support the kids, teachers and work with the administration to get stuff done.

No... they're on an imaginary power trip.
