Really what I’m asking is if my son goes to one of these schools and stays with his current club team, would that hurt his chances of starting or getting playing time?

If he's going to go STA or H, why wouldn't you move him to NL?

Different question - can Heeter help with admissions at sta for a good player at next level?

Doubt it unless the kid has a lot of things going for him like being a minority, being super rich, already having siblings at the school or went to Beauvoir. STA doesn't do the athlete thing nearly as much as other schools. He's only a coach and not a part of the faculty or anything else.

Agreed that STA does not do the “athlete thing” as much as other schools. But I know for a fact travel team coaches from soccer and baseball have called up their coaching counterparts at STA and even the AD to try to help with the admissions process. For sure, the kid has to be in he academic ballpark, but in a town full of high scoring kids, a coach especially at a place like STA which has seen its sports glory days in he rear view mirror, a coach’s rec even if only slightly connected to the school can make all the difference in the world.

I think that was the point. Better have a lot more going for you than just lax to get into STA.

I believe the NL 2020 team is far and away the best in the region and a top 10 team in the country. They have most of the best private school players at that age group. 2023 is also really strong.

NL is fairly honest in saying new kids have to better than those already on the team and try to be balanced in how they juggle existing players and families and new ones. That said, they have fallen prey to some poor judgement. They mysteriously allowed 4(?) "future gap year" kids to play down this past summer season on a high school level team. The kids didn't perform any better than those on the roster and didn't result in any success. The parents were po'd and the kids were no longer on the team as quickly as they came.

Correction: Summer tryouts were by invitation only. They have all class tryouts over the next few weeks.

You are an idiot. Those "summer tryouts by invitations" were because NL had lots of holes on their teams and were trying to fill in needed gaps. Of course those weren't the real tryouts.

Calm down Cabell. Maybe not everyone has read about you on Deadspin or seen the other prominent thread in this forum.

What about 2021? Good team? Can an outsider still make the team or are rosters more or less set prior to tryouts
Anonymous
2021 is a good team, though not as good as NL 2020. For local teams, the DCE 2021s and Madlax 2021 are stronger. So depends on your definition of good to some extent. But as long as you are using good as synonymous with nationally elite, yes. Coaches for the 2021s are good guys and Mitchells are great.

Tryouts are legit, but returning players get the benefit of the doubt and it can be hard to displace long time players as is true most places.

How is college recruiting going with NL? Do they have a dedicated college recruitment coordinator?

Their 2019 and 2021 teams are not very good. 2020 is very strong, but remains to be seen if they can match Madlax and VLC in terms on consistent college placement.

Some people must think they’re great because they’ve have record numbers at the tryouts this year.

Nice try. DCE is the program of choice un MD, not NL.

"they've have"? You must have graduated from The Heights.

High School tryouts were today. Any feedback/observations?

When will they announce rosters?

Probably this evening or tomorrow morning. NL is usually pretty prompt about this.

What are the chances that a player on the elite NL team that gets bumped down to the PG team will stay?

NL 2023 B team (red) was nonexistent last year as they couldn't field a team. This year there is clearly hype with NL 2023A because they played in the WSYL and lost in the semifinals. However they were 5th in HOCO with 3 wins and 4 losses, so not all that amazing. This year they seem to have been able to fill a new B team for a first year team with young inexperienced and unproven coaches who played in HS, but nothing further. The newly formed B team, however, is not the same as the A team and does not have the same coaches. Would you move your son and take that risk on a new team with new young coaches? Does an A team's semifinal level success at a highly publicized tournament create enough hype to turn a program around enough to add a second team?
