I vote to pass the spending bill in the Senate requires 60 votes. The Republicans only have 52 seats. It isn't a majority vote (for the budget) in the Senate like it is in the House. So technically, if all the Republicans in the Senate vote in favor of funding the government and none of the Democrats do, then yes indeed it is the Democrats responsible for the shutdown.

+10000. No way I’m blaming anyone but the Dems. And let’s face it, it’s a bad look that they’re favoring illegals over US citizens born here or naturalized legally.

Oh, did I miss where they Dems control any branches of government?

Some liberals are so dumb when it comes to basic civics!

Oh, please tell us, oh you civics specialist, when is the last time the government shut down when a party controlled all three branches?

See the section in bold ... you are welcome.

Why not protections for all their illegal aunts and 75 cousins each as well?

This is a lie. Family migration was specifically excluded out of the deal.

Protection for dreamers’ parents was definitely on the table. Will be glad if you’re right and it’s been dropped. Frankly if these dreamers get to stay, they should never be able to sponsor anyone for entry ever. Or else you’ll get hordes of deported people coming back bc look now Jose is 21 and can sponsor 19 family members.

It was absolutely dropped. The dems even offered wall funding. Trump said no. Those are the facts.

Sorry you are clueless as to what the deal was and $2billion for border security was a joke

LOL. The GOP does not have 50 senator votes and they have 51 senators. You are welcome.

If the Democrats want to hold the budget hostage because they want a DACA deal then shame on them. Deal with DACA separately. Shame an any party that continues to tack different agendas together as a way to fight the other side. The spending bill doesn't, and shouldn't, have anything to do with DACA.

Do you know why DACA is an issue today? Because the GOP was never once willing to put it to the floor for a vote, so no.

Exactly. The GOP as a whole hasn't acted in good faith on this issue at any point along the way. Dems would be fools to believe that if they pass this resolution the GOP will start negotiating sincerely on DACA.

After all, Susan Collins is still waiting on Obamacare stabilization, and the GOP isn't even pretending to keep their word on that one.

There is a viable proposal for dealing with DACA but it needs funding for the wall/enhanced border security, limiting chain migration, and cutting back on the number of new immigrants by limiting to a merit based system without regard to country of origin. If these are part of the legislation the DACA kids can be given right of residence and a pathway to citizenship.

So DACA beneficiaries are just pawns to achieve other ends. Got it.

DACA beneficiaries are getting a break if legislation passes. What is required is to take measures to minimize the likelihood of it happening again.

So punish the DACA beneficiaries for things other people might do in the future.

How very... something... of you.

Bizarre reasoning ........

You know they're human beings, right? Human beings who are innocent victims in this? They're not things, they're not trash, they're actual human beings, just like you, with just as much inherent value as you have.

Not from an actuarial standpoint

Are you blind? You need 60 votes in the senate to pass most legislation.

Please, I bet you bash government employees any chance you get. Spare me the faux outrage

Nope I was one for 5 years. No dog in the fight today but US born feds vs illegals? Choice is pretty easy for me.

Children. They are children.

Also, the GOP does not want to renew CHIP. You know, for American children. Are you ok with that?

There have been offers to extend CHIP funding but of course they were rebuffed bc they weren’t permanent enough. And btw Dreamers are well into their 20s and 30s not helpless kids.

I could so but that would mean that you are not willing to do your own research but you still spew a lot of stuff as if you have the facts.

DACA is a non-issue right now because Trump's EO was stayed by a federal judge.

Why not wait for the Supreme court to rule and then figure out the next step?

There's actually 3.6 million Dreamer's, though only 800K qualified and signed up for DACA.

So GOP: are you going to deport 3.6 million people at gun point? Raid their homes and businesses, churches and schools?

You would need cattle cars to get that many people out of the country.

Is this the U.S. you want?

Americans are paying attention right now. They want a permanent DACA resolution, they want CHIP funded for at least 6 if not 10 years (saves $6B over ten years to fund it now) and they want the nonsense to stop. The GOP are fully in control and could do all of this yesterday, but they aren't.

No way the dems get blamed for this.

3.6 million people. How does the GOP propose dealing with this?

What's a joke is Trump pushing to cut funding for security measures that actually have been proven to work. Please explain the following:

https://www.nytimes.com/2018/01/08/us/politics/trump-border-wall-funding-surveillance.html
The Trump administration would cut or delay funding for border surveillance, radar technology, patrol boats and customs agents in its upcoming spending plan to curb illegal immigration — all proven security measures that officials and experts have said are more effective than building a wall along the Mexican border.

...security experts said the president’s focus on a border wall ignores the constantly evolving nature of terrorism, immigration and drug trafficking. “People that are dealing with this issue know that a third-century solution to a 21st-century problem is not going to fix this long-term,” said Representative Will Hurd, Republican of Texas and a former C.I.A. officer. Mr. Hurd, whose district includes more than 800 miles of border territory with Mexico, has pushed for more funding for sensors and other border security technologies.

Homeland Security officials have long and frequently described border security as a holistic system, made up not just of walls and fencing but also patrol routes, lighting, cameras, sensors and personnel.

David Bier, a policy analyst with the Cato Institute, said a border wall would do little to stop the drug trade. Most of the cocaine, heroin and methamphetamines smuggled into the United States come through legal ports of entry rather than areas that would be stopped by a wall, according to the Drug Enforcement Administration.

Nor would a wall stop illegal immigration, other experts said. Data from the Department of Homeland Security and research groups like the New York-based Center for Migration Studies show that most undocumented immigrants now simply overstay legally obtained short-term visas — and did not sneak across the border.

Mr. Trump’s budget request for a wall represents more than half of the $33 billion spending blueprint for border security over the next decade. It either eliminates critical funding for border security programs or shifts money from them, threatening to leave gaping holes.
