College admissions is a difficult process, but everyone will be admitted to at least one school come April. And one match is all you need.

Are you devastated when you buy a $1 lotto ticket and don’t win $1000? I mean come on, it’s Stanford. Nobody has a real crisp shot unless they’re the incoming quarterback or a top 50 junior tennis player.

Not the PP, but remember you are talking about 17 year olds here. As parents we can tell them they have a snowball's chance in hell, but they are able to convince themselves they may well be the lucky ones. Especially if they've killed themselves in school and have a perfect record and great ECs. For a lot of them it's their first major rejection, and it takes a while to come to terms with it.

The actual admissions part (applying) was easy.

Has anyone gotten into a selective school?

I know of no one whose child has gotten into the top 5 LACs or Stanford (or Caltech, which just came out), even though plenty of people from my area applied.

is the admissions process much more competitive this year?

Neighbor's kid admitted ED to Amherst. Neighbor is a bit of a dim bulb, so I'd be surprised if the apple fell far from the tree IQ wise. But the kid was a recruited athlete so I guess the morale of the story is that great stats on the field can offset poor stats in the classroom.

No, the moral of the story is if you are going to post mean and unsubstantiated things about a kid's intelligence, you had better check your spelling or you will seem like a jerk.

God son admitted Tulane ED. Great kid. Not an academic, so this was his stretch. So happy and proud it worked out!
