MCPS cannot eliminate the Friday before Easter and the Monday after Easter from the school calendar. State law requires schools to be closed on those days.

We have this same thread every year. It is always around the Jewish holidays. It is one of the most upsetting things about DCUM that Jeff always allows it to go on.

So much misinformation on this thread. Montgomery is not the only county that has an operational issue leading to closure for Jewish holidays.

Howard County closes for the Jewish holidays. Diwali, too.

I reported earlier posts on this thread and he deleted them. You need to report.

What do the Jewish teachers do then? The Jewish population has sharply decreased in MC since the 80's, especially Orthodox. I can't imagine more than 3-5% of the teachers are Jewish. Show us numbers MCPS. Back up your reasons.

This is based on nothing but your own prejudiced speculation.

I have many Jewish friends who teach in MCPS. You think you can tell someone's religion from their last name? Ridiculous.

Um, teachers let their students know what holidays they celebrate. I give teacher gifts for their holidays. No one said anything about last names or presentation.

Do you think more than 10% of MCPS teachers are Jewish? I don't.

Sorry, no need to start with 3 weeks of school with Monday's off for a minority holiday. If anything, think outside the box MCPS. Plan grade events those days. No loss of school and childcare issues for 90+% of the population that can go. Break up the boring ass crap they do all day everyday.

Giving you the benefit of the doubt on your motivation to question the relevance of the Jewish holidays, I think the percentage of teachers and students who celebrate varies widely by school. Tan percent in your school - 25% in mine. But the operational issue arises on those days not only because of the Jewish teachers themselves, but everyone else who routinely needs a sub on top of that -- there's always a baseline of absenteeism. The system just can't handle it. What is the point of scheduling a school day when multiple classes have to be tended by one sub or an administrator? What learning occurs in that environment? Aftercare and other options are there for babysitting.

That really needs to be changed. I wonder how many other states have this. I much rather Spring Break be between 3-4th marking periods like private schools do.

Contact your state legislators. If you don't know who they are or how to contact them, you can Google Maryland find my elected officials.

Well how about they at least try and see how many need off to see what they need. I think it is ridiculous that we keep closing on these holidays and have no idea if the need could easily be filled. If we want holidays like Eid, Yom Kippur, etc.. off every year than we need to get rid of Spring Break and just have the 4 days off. You can't have both.

Diwali is celebrated Oct 19th 2017 and HC is not off that day.

You could have both, if Governor Hogan hadn't decided that local school systems didn't get to set their own calendars but instead had to open and close for the benefit of the Ocean City tourism industry.
