Next Year's School Calendar

I heard MCPS staff got some information about proposed calendars for next school year. Does anyone have any specifics regarding what they are looking at?

Saw a memo circulating. There are four different proposals, some of which cut Jewish holidays and Spring break.

It could be reduced to the Friday before Easter and the Monday after Easter, though.

Thank you, PP! So four scenarios for starting Tuesday 9/2 and ending Tuesday (half day) 6/11:

1: 180 days, closed 9/10 and 9/17, spring break is 6 days (4 days plus the 2 Easter days), 0 professional days
2. 182 days, no September closures, spring break is 4 days (2 days plus the 2 Easter days), 2 professional days
3. 182 days, closed 9/10 and 9/17, spring break is 4 days (2 days plus the 2 Easter days), 0 professional days
4. 180 days, no September closures, spring break is 6 days (4 days plus the 2 Easter days), 2 professional days

I truly hope they get rid of the Jewish holidays. Less than 10% of the population in MCPS is Jewish and starting the school off with three 4 day weeks is ridiculous.

I agree that eliminating the Jewish holidays is a good option. We cannot possibly incorporate the holidays of all religions into the school calendar, so it would be best to eliminate as many as possible. MCPS has always been accommodating to students and staff who wish to take off for religious reasons. I hope MCPS will petition Governor Hogan to eliminate Good Friday and Easter Monday as mandatory school holidays, as well.

I like the calendar that eliminates those holidays and keeps Spring Break. All parties need a break at that time of year.

He can't do that. It's state law. Ask your state elected representatives to get a bill through the General Assembly, then ask Governor Hogan to support (or at least not oppose) the bill.

Keep in mind that if they choose an option that reduces spring break to four days, two of those days are designated as snow make-ups and we could easily end up only having Good Friday and Easter Monday off. I think that would be very unpopular. If they choose a calendar that keeps Spring Break and we lose two days to snow, we still have a reasonable break left.
