Swastika tattoos and waterpark

We really do not know the persons' back-story in OP's account.

Do you honestly think op would have posted this if it was an Indian with a henna swastika? We all know the difference between that and a white side with a big black chunky swastika.

+1
Whenever I'll need Exhibit 1 for Whitesplaining, I'll link to this thread.

Just like when I was in DC last year and there was a man holding a sign saying " God hates Fags" I was with DD and it just gives you a bad feeling....

There are plenty of people without tattoos who are racists, they just? don't advertise it, but live their whole life along those lines (white neighborhood, white schools, white fitness clubs, basically token minorities only here and there in their life). You would never know, but openly expressing one guy will ruin the experience?

+1. As a mom of mixed race kids myself, I would much rather know that someone is a tool and avoid them than invest time and energy only to find out later.

You're the perfect example why white people should really educate themselves about race relations before having mixed race kids. You might not realize it now, but your kids will judge you for this kind of attitude (if they don't already.)

- A biracial person

PP here, and I would welcome an explanation of how this kind of attitude is problematic. I learned this principle from my AA husband, and it made sense to me. I also know as much about race relations as a white person can (worked at a number of community organizations in minority communities, worked abroad in minority communities, etc).

DH's view is that he would prefer to know who is open to him and who is not, so that he can more squarely address racism head on instead of trying to ferret out and dispel the biases that people don't even admit they hold.

Sorry, I was harsh, I thought your "would much rather know that someone is a tool" referred to the swastika tatoo. Maybe that's not what you meant.

Talk to your husband about this particular scenario. A swastika tatoo in a waterpark for children, brazenly displayed = psychological assault on POCs there. It wouldn't roll off my back the way it would for Whites. You say to "avoid" so that means leaving a line once that guy joins it? Leaving the food court once he gets in? Refusing to share a ride with him? Do you see how onerous this "avoidance" would be for POC? And what if this emboldens others and there will be 20 like him at the next park visit?

I bet all the racist "free speech" PPs would sing a different tune if the guy was, say, wearing a shirt offensive to women. How about with a print showing man dragging a woman by her hair, with the caption "Bitches are for beating and raping"? Y'all would lose it. I mean, people lose their sh!t when they see a woman breastfeeding in public, but swastikas at a children's park are OK? SMDH

Those that preach tolerance are intolerant when it isn't in their favor philosophically.

The reason that I would ignore the person OP describes is simple, I am a tolerant person. That doesn't mean I don't have opinions and beliefs that I am firm in. I abhor racism but I live in a nation founded on principles of free speech and right to believe as one chooses too. If you can't allow racist comments or swastikas etc. then you are intolerant and should re-evaluate.

BTW, tolerance is defined..."showing willingness to allow the existence of opinions or behavior that one does not necessarily agree with."

PP, when you wander all over with your generalizations and faux comparisons you completely negate it all.

FYI, I tolerate racists, misogynistic media called rap that doesn't seem to be a problem for millions of Americans. And I see NO difference between a racist swastika tattooed skinhead and the person putting out that trash rap. None.

It's an interesting situation (horribly disturbing but interesting). Going to ask my husband in the morning what he would do in this situation. We are Jewish and, while we personally have heard subtle anti-Semitic jabs, neither of us have witnessed it overtly in our faces.

The irony is that DH has a Star of David tattoo on his forearm.

THIS.

Don't be absurd. Now you are all sounding like bigots.

I'm a black immigrant mom with a black husband and black daughters. Don't tell me I'm being absurd.

I would have been offended + disgusted, but would have just let it go.

I doubt that I would take the time to report him.

He really should have covered up since I am sure there were plenty of kiddos around.

Easy guess that you're white.

And you tolerate racist, mysoginistic rap at the Waterpark when you're there with your kids? Ha ha!

Was he white or indian? An indian guy told me once he wanted to get a swatiska tattoo because it's actually their ancient symbol but hestitated due to people like the OP. Was the guy a skinhead or dark?

People. This is so stupid. Op wouldn't have posted this if it was an indian. My child had a play date at a friend's house recently and they are Hindu. I saw a tiny swastika by the front door frame when I picked her up. I definitely understood that was an entirely different species of swastika than had I picked her up at a white family's house and seen red flags with black swastikas hanging in the living room.

You are assuming a lot yet the OP has not said whether the person was white or indian. I think that is pretty stupid of you. For all you know the white person could have been a hindu convert and tattooed that swatiska on him. I don't see many nazis in DC.

Yeah, white men who have swastika tattoos are often Hindu converts who wish to honor the god Vishnu. Its really just impossible to know if this is the case or if a white dude with a swastika tattoo is a virulent racist. Reach for the moon, even if you miss you'll land among the stars.

Op. The man was a ~60 year old white man.
