Dirty secret about an industry that you have worked in?

For all the daycare workers who witnessed abuse: Did you report it? What happened after you reported? You were all mandated reporters, you know...

+1 in restaurants. Also, lots of drinking & drugs.

Journalism--probably 50% of the stories you read are advertisements in disguise.

Child care--oh, Lord. Let's just say parents only see a TINY sliver of what goes on.

You've never worked in a newsroom.

You've never seen my resume.

We gave lip service to separation of advertising & editorial, but when it came down to it, writers who made advertisers look bad didn't last long. And yes, 90% of what I wrote about was an advertisement of some sort--reviews, previews, community events, interviews, etc. I didn't always take a totally neutral or positive angle, but any coverage is advertising of a sort. My soul felt sold in that job.

You haven't seen mine. It's how I know you haven't worked in a newsroom, not a reputable one anyway.

Just another reminder to wash any clothes you bring home from a store. Consider that most everything has been tried on or worn, repeatedly.

As a teenager, my first job was in retail and part of my sales job was to wear entire outfits, head to toe, while working in the store. I'd change multiple times a shift - just rehang and refold the still-warm pieces.

I was expected to wear store clothes while I unpacked and tagged and sorted incoming merchandise in the warm and dusty back room, too. Only removed deodorant marks if it was obvious, as per training. Makeup stains, no problem. These went in the clearance pile for future sales.

Think most people know this but

Contracts are almost always about who you know, who works where vs the best solution
Revolving door between gov and industry including former employees who become govies favor a firm and vice versa with promise of jobs for each other
Upper management does absolutely nothing
Only idiots work on proposals

I worked at one right out of college and they would 'revise" our timecards and what projects we were billing to after we'd entered them and bring revised ones around for us to sign and put earlier dates on them.

YES

Thought I was the only one that felt that way. Many of these people couldn't get a job in the private sector.

I worked at an elementary age childcare program - for after school and breaks- and the kids were always safe and well fed and stuff. Some of my colleagues weren't great - but no one was ever cruel or harmed the children. Not all people who work in childcare are cruel...

Securities trading before the recession and the Madoff era.

The heads of the company went to jail for fraud and embezzlement. The company is no more.

PP here. My former employer was featured on an episode of American Greed.

I didn't know what was going on or ever have any real contact with the heads of it. But I can tell you my entire desk/group was either bros, creeps, or cokeheads.

I volunteered at a well known NGO for a year. I learned that marketing at the national level is everything. Nothing pulls the American heartstrings like good marketing. The actual work that this organization does in the field is minimal and doesn't really help that many people, but we are absolutely beloved in our local community because of the name-brand reputation.

I worked at a family-style restaurant in high school. Every meal came with a mini warm loaf of bread. Which sometimes got accidentally dropped on the floor, picked up, dusted off, and served.
Everyone raved about this restaurant's cheesecake. Truth be told, it was Jello brand boxed cheesecake mix.

Most lawyers with billable hour quotas defraud their clients by billing for time not worked.

Sometimes it's minor "rounding" or "estimating", but it many cases it's intentional and deliberate.

Gambling in Casablanca? I'm shocked.

I worked for an "at risk youth travel abroad / exchange" program.

Turned out to be a front for pedophiles who would meet these at risk youths in countries where the age of consent differed, or the laws were such that prosecution would be hard. Truth be told the warning signs were there before I even started, but i was a bit niave.

Reported to the FBI. Sadly, the organization still exists today.

You may win. That is just awful that the FBI did nothing.

Damn Comey.

Therapists and psychologists always come from screwed up families and often have way more issues than their own patients!

I like most of my patients.

I am no longer a doula but was an active one for over 10 years. The blatant lies that OB Nurses and Doctors tell mothers are terrible. Women are taken advantage of every single day and damaged and sometimes don't even know it for years after a birth. Choose your provider and birth place carefully!

Cleaned hotel rooms to put myself through grad school.

Those glasses are RARELY washed. If they look like they haven't been used by the occupants, they aren't touched by the housekeepers.

Telephones, remotes, door handles, etc.? Also NEVER washed.

I think everyone knows this by now but the duvet/comforters aren't cleaned regularly.
