I used to think a million dollar house would be a mansion

It's possible if they saved religiously for a few years before the wife became a sahm.

My husband is private sector and I'm a gov employee. We make around 380k now and made around 320k when we saved for a house. It took us a little over a year to save around 125k for our downpayment. We had some other money in savings we used. We could have easily saved another 125-150k if we had continued to save for another year and purchased a more expensive home. It's definitely doable, especially without student loans or a wedding to pay for.

125k down doesn't get you a 1.5MM home. Thats where this whole argument started, follow along. That and being a 29 year old. I'm not saying it isn't possible to be legit but with the local masses I have met, most are helped and it's obvious. No jealousy, just find it pathetic.

What's pathetic?

You didn't read what I wrote. We saved around 125k and had another 50k I savings. Could have easily saved another 125-150 if we had stayed in our apartment another year. So we would have had around 350k for a downpayment.

Fwiw I doubt most of these people are 29. They just probably look young to you because you're older now.

That because the PP can't buy a 1.5 mm house he thinks no one else can afford it either without family help or winning the lottery.

You're the one who didn't follow along. 350K plus is enough for a downpayment on a 1.5 mm house!

Oh definitely. Maybe Bethesda. I live around people like this, and the wives sit at home thinking their husbands are fat execs when mommy and daddy gave one or both of them 500K to put towards their first home as a wedding present. Makes me want to vomit.

I was the PP who mentioned Arlington/Mclean.

Neighbor across the street bought a new build and the wife stays at home.
I still remember her mentioning the family home in Maine.

I LOL and said most be nice to have somewhere to runoff to leave the madness.

So common around here and I feel like they truly believe that's how everyone lives. It is AMAZING and then they will look at you straight in the eye, in front of their 1.5MM home, and tell you he is a consultant at Deloitte, etc. Or worse, works for the government.... ugh.

Sorry - I don't understand the issue with this. You think they could only afford that house with family money?

Sounds like they dislike people who work for consulting firms or the federal government. Not sure where they would prefer for one to work and what would be an acceptable career.

I think that point is that those careers can't afford that house. Not without help.

My DH works for Deloitte and we live in a million dollar home. No help from mommy and daddy.

No family help. DH worked for AC. Smart enough to leave in his late 20s and go independent. Began making high 6-figures by early 30s. I'm a GS-14 with good benefits. We've a HHI of 400k-750k since 30 years old now 46. We own an $800k house in the city almost paid off (we have been renting it out ) and a $1.1 million house (now around $1.3m). We used to get a lot of snotty comments and assumptions, e.g., dumbasses that don't know specialty software consultants can make upwards of $600k/year. Oh well. I drive an old, dented Japanese car to boot that I love like my firstborn.

So, pp, You should take a long look in the mirror and see somebody that doesn't have a F-king clue and is a spiteful, empty person.

Please your DH wasn't that brilliant, he cashed in on the contracting and defense boom of the bush years, just like today's inventor of 'Yo!'

Umm. No. He doesn't do defense or govt contracting. He started out when Clinton was President and was not tech boom. Hard work and brilliant.

Ok so not 29. When Clinton was president, I was in middle school.

The 29 reference comes from the original poster who is 29 supposedly.

I do have one but that's not the point, I'm not nor was I 29 when she bought it. I'm in my 30's now and that's all I will say on that matter.

What's the fixation on a 29 year old consultant with a SAHM in an expensive house? Maybe they did get family help, maybe not. They are not really the norm here in $1.5M+ homes - most are older, had real estate luck in the past, saved a ton, etc. Even the consultants and Feds.

Going on and on this 29 year old just makes you sound jealous. Let it go.

Only addressing the comments made by those who are leaving that part out as it was a big part of the initial jabbing. Not jealous at all, I did it myself.

Fabulous to know. By 29, we had a HHI of $550k. The year was 1999. So, yes, bought our expensive home all by ourselves without $ from our parents. A fed and a software consultant. I know that bugs the shit out of you for some unknown reason---the fact some people can make it without parental help. Now in our 40s--HHI hovers around $650-750k.

For the record, I could care less if somebody has family pay for their entire house. Lucky dogs if that is the case. My best friend's in-laws paid for hers and she is as down-to-earth and fun as it gets. You, on the other hand, sound like a bitter b*tch. You are too young to be that angry. Stop worrying about your neighbor's financial situation and go for a walk or something.
