I used to think a million dollar house would be a mansion

Oh definitely. Maybe Bethesda. I live around people like this, and the wives sit at home thinking their husbands are fat execs when mommy and daddy gave one or both of them 500K to put towards their first home as a wedding present. Makes me want to vomit.

Just wait until the market crashes. It'll be worth half that. Then you'll feel better about living in your $650,000 house.

Hey, look that's probably just a quirky start-up CEO who needs a hug.

I was the PP who mentioned Arlington/Mclean.

Neighbor across the street bought a new build and the wife stays at home.
I still remember her mentioning the family home in Maine.

I LOL and said most be nice to have somewhere to runoff to leave the madness.

Wow, so many nasty losers on this thread.

OP, it seems you've struck a nerve. My guess would be jealousy over a 20-something living in a nicer house than them. Pretty pathetic, really.

Anyway, yeah- I agree. Didn't "a million dollar mansion" used to be a commonly used phrase? Now it will get you a split level in Reston. Ugh.

So common around here and I feel like they truly believe that's how everyone lives. It is AMAZING and then they will look at you straight in the eye, in front of their 1.5MM home, and tell you he is a consultant at Deloitte, etc. Or worse, works for the government.... ugh.

Well I have a million dollar house now, 1.3 million, and it was built in the 1960s and is generally pretty dumpy. Don't get me wrong, it's a great commute and excellent school district but I just thought a million dollar house would be...better? Any one feel this way too?

Yes. I feel that way. I can also buy for that price, but haven't yet since I also had dreams that 1.3-1.5 would buy a mansion and can't come to terms with throwing the money on a 60's or 70's hand me down. I also do not want to move away from the excellent school district and therefore continuing to live in my townhome until I can afford my kind of "mansion"

Well, my townhouse cost me 1.5m, does that make you feel better about your situation? Make peace with reality, will you?

Move to DC from NY and you'll think real estate is a steal. In NY you'd have a one bedroom apartment and it may not even have a washer/dryer.

Oh shut up. Boomers want to gleefully sell their 1960's rambler for 850k and then complain about the very people who needed help to purchase it.

I could care less about the boomers and their land values. That isn't what we are jabbing here at, not sure why you bring that into the conversation.

Oh come on guys. I'm sure it's the age thing they got most people up in arms – yes most 20 somethings don't live in houses that cost over $1 million – but there are posts on this forum CONSTANTLY about how little a million dollars get you around here.

Ever watch HGTV? In the south people are buying eight bedroom mansions on sprawling lots for $1 million. Around here not so much.

The best is when somebody not from the area is standing in your kitchen telling you about Susie So and So's "million home". Big gulp of wine.

But--I get OP's line of logic. I also thought a million dollars would be mansion-like. I always go for location/walkability and comfort myself with the news that somebody else in say, Manhattan or London, paid even more price per square footage.

It's painful to watch Joanna Gaines and the beautiful designs down in Waco, TX on 'Fixer Upper'. But---it's Waco, TX.

I have to stop watching hgtv. It's depressing.

This, exactly! OP here. I merely said my age to give context that prices have increased dramatically over a short period of time. Not to "humblebrag" or whatever people think. And fwiw no one helped with our downpayment.

We paid over 800k for our teardown to build new

I get it. I often look at homes and think "I'd be sad if I paid $1.xM and this is what I got".
