Gary Johnson: "And what is Aleppo?"

Anonymous
He's still smarter, and would make a better president, than Trump or Hillary.

It was an intentional gotcha. A normal question would have provided some context to introduce the subject matter area.

It was not a gotcha question. I work as a teacher and read the newspaper 2-3 times a week. I completely understood what was being asked, and know what Aleppo is.

Mike Barnicle: "What would you do if you were elected about Aleppo?"
Gary Johnson: "And what is Aleppo?"
MB: "You're kidding."
GJ: "No."
MB: "Aleppo is in Syria. It's the epicenter of the refugee crisis."
GJ: "Got it. Got it.

I have to say that's a very poorly worded question.

intentionally so

+1. I haven't been impressed by what I've seen of Gary Johnson, but the wording of the question is weird. Why not just say Syria or the Syrian Civil War unless he wanted specific solutions about only the city of Aleppo...in which case the question is still poorly worded.

Please describe your definition of a "gotcha" question.

Even with a "gotcha" question you can't be "gotten" unless you are ill-informed to begin with. He could have said "Aleppo in what respect?" or "are you referring to the humanitarian crisis in Aleppo?" or "are you talking about the condiment?" Etc. There are lots of responses he could have made other than "what is Aleppo?"

Above PP. Actually I agree with this. Though the question is poorly worded, Johnson should definitely know what Aleppo is and if he did it's likely he would have said "What specifically about Aleppo" or something.

It isn't weird because Aleppo was a the top of the news for a week. No one says it's weird wording when people refer to Benghazi, or San Bernardino, or Sandy Hook or Fukushima or Crimea. When these place names make the news, we are expected to know them. And we are supposed to know what is being discussed, not just the spot on a map.
