| white people also pay taxes and are also entitled to a free and public education in the city where they live. When they are accepted through a charter lottery there is nothing barely legal about it. If you want barely legal, check out the new for minority boys HS. If you want more Latins, throw your weight behind expansion. I agree its a fantastic model whose only limitation is its small size. The school itself should stay small thats its beauty. However, given the demand there are grounds for replication. It would be interesting to ser how it worked in ward 7 or 8 as an all AA school which it sounds like is what you want. I would argue for more in central locations (difficult in DC ) that continued to draw a high level of interest across different populations. |
Martha Cutts, now retired Latin HOS, said in the Post last year that she wished there could be a lottery preference for economically disadvantaged students. It isn't allowed under current lottery rules so a moot point. But the demographic shift that's happened there is changing the school. There is something to this that's bigger than Latin. White families are less likely to choose new schools, at least for upper grades (high school) until there is a 'track record.' Once Latin got a permanent building and had graduated some 12th graders it got much more popular among white families. Same thing HS happened at LAMB and YY too, to a lesser degree. Both are diverse but also more white then they were in their first 5 years. I don't think there is a conspiracy rather that schools more appealing to white parents once it is clear they 'work.' |
| So anything else to say re school uniforms? |
Thank you, Sir. As a Latino, I'm tired of this racial obsession in DC. Schools are there to educate, and every kid counts the same, regardless of race or ethnicity. |
DCPS can do things like the high school for boys and application schools because they provide other schools open to all students (e.g. their IB comprehensive high school). Charters can't have any selectivity and are required to do significant outreach to show they are trying to recruit a diverse applicant pool. The idea for replicating a second Washington Latin, to be located in Ward 7 or 8, is coming from the Washington Latin Board of Directors. As for Latinos, the last year we have public data for (2014-15) there were no Latino students enrolled in either Washington Latin middle or high school. |
May be some reporting hitch. I know a good numbers of Latino students there, and last time I checked I believe they accounted for 15% or so of the student body. In any case, I'd love for all this race-based profiling to stop. |
How bizarre. Thats the year my child graduated and my child is Latino. One of quite a few in the class actually. Question data, yeah? |
In fact, that there were no Latinos in the whole school is a preposterous statement. I dont know where you got that data but I'm sort of done with this discussion. Latin serve all children well, and served working poor /middle class not fancy zip code children especially well..in DC, so many are Latino and AA and immigrant. That you begrudge these strivers and education because they don't live in war 7 and 8 is too bad. To all the white people who want to go to school along side, good on you for recognizing quality. Latin is very unique -is hard to replicate, but hopefully it can be done in some way. |

The data is from the OSSE website - learndc.org
Tell a Latin admin and they can get it corrected if there is an error. |
+ a million |
I have no idea of the percentage of Hispanic students attending Latin. I do know that my son has Hispanic friends at the school. |

| Maybe no white students enroll in Banneker because there is no outreach. If you are going to say Latin needs to be more welcoming to AA students, the same argument should also apply to Banneker. Why wouldn't Banneker create ways to attract white students who are increasing in number? |
