How old are you, HHI and how much saved for retirement?

Anonymous
both 39, one kid, 2 years old, in daycare
HHI 300k
two federal pensions (one has been in job for 5 years, other for 14 years)
401k/TSP total of about 750k
Own about 50% of our home, probably would sell for $1 million now
We just finished paying off student loans, now will focus savings on college and beefing up TSPs.

39 and 37. $750k in 401(k)s. Another $700k outside. Feel like we are ahead for our age but behind for our HHI.

me: 45
salary 100k
retirement 250k
other investment 100k
college savings 100k
I started putting away $ at 31, after I finished PhD and paid off debts.

DH 53
salary 150k
retirement 250k

shared investment from sale of earlier home 165k, plus 200k equity.

DH BARELY SAVED FOR RETIREMENT UNTIL I MET HIM. I now make him max out and put in catch up.
He is the worst when it comes to finances. I worry very much about it. Thank god I will inherit enough $ to pay for the kids colleges and then some.

We are both maxing out on retirement and IRAs. In addition finally upping kids 529 plans. Kids will be in college in 4-5 years so it isn't much but we plan to be mortgage free by the time oldest is in college so can funnel some additional money for his college.

That is an impressive amount of savings for that income (assuming you are in DC area). Congrats!

Thanks! Yes we live in the DC suburbs. I think key is living below our means. I feel like I'm playing catchup in retirement based since I was a SAHM for almost a decade.
