Swine Flu epidemic in Mexico (and possibly US)

Swine Flu Could Become More Dangerous

The swine flu virus that has killed more than 80 people in Mexico may mutate into a "more dangerous" strain, the World Health Organisation has warned. Skip related content
"It's quite possible for this virus to evolve... when viruses evolve, clearly they can become more dangerous to people," said Keiji Fukuda, of the global health watchdog.

Mr Fukuda also called for international vigilance as health experts wait to see whether the virus will turn into a worldwide pandemic.

Over 1,300 people are now thought to have contracted the virulent H1N1 swine influenza after it mutated into a form that spreads from human to human.

The Mayor of New York has confirmed that eight school children are suffering mild symptoms after becoming infected.

And there have been at least 12 other confirmed cases in Texas, Ohio, California and Kansas.

The White House has declared a public health emergency but told the public "not to panic".

ugh, are YOU serious PP? As an asthmatic, I will say that YES a nebulizer (bronchial inhaler) does help with asthma. It does not TREAT sickness or the underlying causes of asthma or upper resp illness but it is essential for relieving the symptoms of asthma. Dont be so aggressive if you dont know the facts.

My pedi told me that using a neb regularly on my toddler keeps the lungs from getting super-irritated, which if they did, could make them more susceptible to lung infections. It's not treating an illness, it's preventing it from getting worse.

It is my understanding that there was a large outbreak in New York City and that all of those affected had gone to Mexico for Spring Break. While 59 have been killed by swine flu in Mexico, those affected here in the U.S. have only suffered mild symptoms. CDC is unsure why. There is probably no reason to be concerned, unless someone near you has recently returned from Mexico. Incubation is 2 days.

HA! My fault. I posted that. I have asthma and meant to say it will not help with the FLU. DUH. My typo. The nebulizer opens airways and helps with asthma. It does not treat the flu. Just my typo.

Mexico's Health Secretary Jose Angel Cordoba said 68 people have died of flu and the new swine flu strain had been confirmed in 20 of those deaths. At least 1,004 people nationwide were sick from the suspected flu, he said.

Isn't Micheal Medved a movie reviewer? he's on CNN right now discussing swine flu. WTF??? Is this a joke? Why should I care whether or not a movie reviewer thinks swine flu is serious or not?

When I was in grad school, my upstairs neighbor died of the flu. He was otherwise totally healthy, no underlying medical problems, in his late 20s, and a newlywed who had married his college sweetheart. They were such an endearing couple, so friendly, down-to-earth, always in a good mood, just seemed always to be happy together. The UPS guy was still dropping off packages in Crate and Barrel boxes every few days-- gifts from their wedding registry-- when my roommate and I came home to see bereavement notices tucked under the windshield wipers of family members' cars. I still feel so sad whenever I think of them.

But I always take the flu seriously now. I won't get crazy, but I'll watch the news and take the CDC's recommended precautions.

Do any of us REALLY care of these other posters think this is serious? It's called boredom.

Nationally syndicated conservative talk show host and movie critic heard every afternoon. Includes links to Judeo-Christian commentary, and movie reviews.

I really want to know and I don't think it's just a matter of "passing along information". Why is this preying on your mind so much?

OP here. Just to be clear, I have not been the only one posting news and information about this swine flu outbreak. At least one other person, possibly more, is also "posting and reposting."

Personally, I'm not obsessed IMO but have been involved with pandemic planning for several years. I heard about the outbreak in Mexico just last week and thought it was a pretty big deal because of the possibilities of pandemic potential plus obviously the concern about the fatalities. I wanted to give dcumoms and dads a heads up was all.

I think the person you quoted regarding the posting of information was talking to the person who keeps discussing the 1976 flu outbreak story. That is what their comment is attached to.

OP again -- yes, that was me. I was explaining that this situation is COMPLETELY different from the 1976 swine flu situation. I didn't realize I was being repetitive though. Sorry!

OP, I agree with your post. The two situations are very different and I appreciate that you explained that. They are not the same at all.
