New Beauvoir Family, Seeking Advice, Along the Lines of "I wish I had known X" When First Starting

That's not true.

The word among current Beauvoir third grade parents is that NCS took all the Beauvoir girls that applied for next year but that a number of girls did not even apply to NCS and that ultimately about half of the girls in the Beauvoir third grade chose to go to such other schools as GDS, Maret and Sidwell. Of the more than 30 third grade Beauvoir boys, St. Albans took all but a couple of those that applied.

So which one is accurate -- 11:25 or 13:06?

I'm 11:25. I could be wrong. I heard from two different parents of Beauvoir third graders, but I don't really know.

I never heard that in the admissions process, 10:49....

Interesting. Are you a Beauvoir parent? I am, and I have heard different things but as it's hearsay I can't really argue with you.

NP. It's standard practice that STA rejects at least 2 Beauvoir boys. In my DS's class, 3 were rejected that was about 4 years ago.

That seems right based on my observation through the last few years. Although keep in mind, a fair number of likely STA "rejects" are dissuaded from applying in the first place, and are steered towards other schools. Those who insist on ignoring these hints, sometime outright edicts, from the Beauvoir Exmissions Director often find out the hard way that getting into Beauvoir does not make getting into STA somehow a foregone conclusion.

Very true. In all 3 cases the outplacement director tried to persuade them to apply elsewhere. In one case, she flat out told the parents during their December feedback session that STA wasn't interested in offering their son admission. Not pleasant.

Based on the last two PPs, it sounds like Beauvoir is only encouraging a subset of its students to apply to STA and NCS (presumably only those the school feels will be successful in the admission process) and steering others to apply to other schools. Maybe that's why so many girls are going to the other schools?

I'm a Beauvoir parent and actually don't know of a single girl dissuaded from applying to NCS. It seems more the view of many parents that other schools may be a better fit. These are schools like Sidwell, Maret and Holton, so unlikely meeting admissions criteria is the reason for looking elsewhere. One thing I've heard from a few sets of parent is that they thought they'd be wanting a single sex school when their daughters started at Beauvoir, but now they think coeducational might be better, at least until high school.

It's not necessarily a bad thing that Beauvoir is discouraging some families from applying to STA or NCS - as long as they are doing it because they do not think the child is a good fit for those schools. Parents are clearly free to ignore what the school says - but it seems to me if the school feels like a child would not be good for STA or NCS, that STA and NCS would probably agree. And it would be horrible to send a child to a place that 1) didn't want them and 2) was a poor fit.

I think if Beauvoir is discouraging you from applying to STA/NCS, isn't getting a rejection a foregone conclusion? How can Beauvoir advocate for an STA/NCS applicant for whom they do not think the school would be a good fit?!

Done during a ritualistic cleansing, where the newly initiated must don hooded lime green robes (so Big Bows must be removed) and cite the Beauvoir Life Principles, while ingesting lobster rolls . . . .

My best piece of advice - ignore nearly all of the Beauvoir-related posts on DCUM. Most are from rabid lovers and haters. Both of the species are repulsive, and possibly even crazy.

Funny. But I don't get the lobster roll reference. Do they serve them at lunch?

that after NCS, DD would simply migrate to Georgetown
