New Beauvoir Family, Seeking Advice, Along the Lines of "I wish I had known X" When First Starting

I'm sure it is more the case that there are a couple of boys each year that aren't a good fit, academically or behaviorally, and they simply aren't offered a place. I did hear this year that there were more Beauvoir applicants than usual (larger class? fewer self-selecting out? I don't know), and wondered if they have a cap on the number they want from Beauvoir, in order to leave a certain number of places for non-Beauvoir boys.

I have heard the same thing about higher number of 4th grade applicants, I think mainly due to the fact that there were so many siblings.

Done during a ritualistic cleansing, where the newly initiated must don hooded lime green robes (so Big Bows must be removed) and cite the Beauvoir Life Principles, while ingesting lobster rolls . . . .

My best piece of advice - ignore nearly all of the Beauvoir-related posts on DCUM. Most are from rabid lovers and haters. Both of the species are repulsive, and possibly even crazy.

Funny. But I don't get the lobster roll reference. Do they serve them at lunch?

Lobster rolls are a staple at Flower Mart, a festival on the Cathedral Close the first weekend in May.

Flower Mart is going on this weekend!

What's with the stone walkway that they are putting up in front of the school? Was it required by law for handicap access, or is it just another way to make a splash and spend our steadily increasing tuition?

I do not know whether it serves a purpose. It has the effect of making Beauvoir fit in more with the other Cathedral schools. I like it. But yes, I'm sure it cost a fortune.

Are you current parents and don't KNOW about the Beauvoir Outdoors Campaign?? The new wall is part of a huge outdoors renovation project ioncluding all new playground equipment, an early education deck, fields, outdoor restrooms and more. Previously there was no walkway from the parking lot to the front entrance, so a walkway was built--within the stone walls) for safety and convenience of those who park and walk into the school ...

How do you have kids at Beauvoir and NOT know this!?!?

I was thinking the same thing. We're new Beauvoir parents but there is NO WAY could have missed that. If anything, Beauvoir Outdoors info provided has been overkill.

PP never said anything about the Beauvoir Outdoors Campaign. Just the walkway. Typical shrill Beauvoir parent. I know, because I am one. But we have to stop assuming everyone is out to trash our school. I, for one, like the stone look, but thinks it clashes with the overall architecture of the school, which I believe was deliberately stone-free so as not to echo nearby St. Albans School, St. Albans Parish, etc.

The new playground looks like a Navy SEALS obstacle course.

Actually, the design of the school, which was redone in 1999 was done in that light colored stone to preserve as much as possible the original Beauvoir mansion that stood on that site and which becam ethe school in the 1930's . It had nothing to do with the cathedral or the design of teh cathedral schools. The mansion predated all three.

The new play ground was not paid for with tuition increases. It was paid for by the capital campaign( perhaps you weren't asked to give) and some money, I believe, from Saint Albans to compensate for them losing some land to the planned Saint Albans atjletci fields.

What are the insiders' thoughts on the newly named head of school?

The school that she comes from," the Philadelphia School", has an outstanding reputation in Philadelphia and their board is made up of some very interesting and formidable professionals. She comes from a school that, like Beauvoir< is a progressive school that works hard to foster the moral development as well. Seems while at Philadelphia school she was a big part of both fund raising to add to the physical space of a growing school and more clearly defining that school's future mission. Perhaps good practice for Beauvoir, but have to wonder how an Educator/Administrator used to running a " stand alone" school will feel answering to, not one, but two Boards ( Beauvoir AND the PECF) Wish her the best.

She seems young but very strong. We're thrilled. We'll miss Paula, but can't wait to have her on board. The prior heads have each been able to stay for so long, she looks like the same could be possible again, and it's so great for the stability of the school.

I like this description, like how's pop described our first horse.
