Here is a situation I haven't come across before.

Oh well, right? I can't believe someone is seriously pissed off about that. Especially considering how worthless the posts were in the first place. I remember seeing the mayonaise and witness protection posts and thought they made no sense. If that's what's passing for irony these days, I feel like weeping.

The thing is, trifecta of PAC NW posters, your posts were about as ironic as the Alanis Morrisette song of the same name. Irony is something I suspect is beyond the grasp of these posters. I'd say if a post is relevant or entertainingly snarky that might be good reason to keep them, but these posts were nonsensical gibberish. I can see why Jeff thought they were the work of a spambot.

I still don't like posting the name of someone's employer, but the left coast triumvirate should get over that already. Especially if there are really 500 people and Jeff truly checked before posting. In the meantime, to the west coasties: go away already! You are boring, not helpful, irrelevant, and patently unamusing. It's not that I object to outside DC perspectives, but I do find it very peculiar that three people are spending so much time debating the rules and policies of a parenting website in a group of zip codes 3000 miles away giving way to annoyance.

Weep away. The irony was lost on you. Does that mean that it's lost on the next person? Why are you so comfortable with someone pre-screening posts for you? It's funny how flexible you are on this issue. First, you're a little up in arms about employment info being posted. Then, after I get on jsteele about it, you come back on and post that I essentially deserved it. And then you further illustrate my point of outsiders being unwelcome here. I've yet to see one explanation how my location invalidates my responses. Yet I'm being told by more than one of you to leave and never come back based on the fact that I'm NOT IN DC. Am I the only one that sees how provincial that is?

I'm articulating my points at least reasonably intelligently. Why are you trying to silence THAT? I don't get it. Of any topic in this entire site, is there one more important than the ability to post what is on one's mind without fear of reprisal? THAT is what we are talking about. Maybe this will make it easier: Trees = annoying posts, Forest = being able to freely voice an opinion. Also? If you hadn't noticed the number of views on this thread is quite high. And it's not just me sitting here refreshing the page. Either word is getting out that there is a heated discussion in here or people really are intrigued by a "situation I haven't come across before". Judging by the lack of input on the original topic, I'd say it's the former, not the latter. It's not exactly bad for business, if you follow. That makes me think that it isn't just TEDIUM. Heck, you came back and posted again.

Good god. Are you seriously confusing this website with important and protected speech? Irony is not lost on me. What you wrote was not irony. Poster, do you need to be schooled in the definitions of irony? Here is the first hit off a google search for the definition of the word:

Verbal irony is a trope in which the intended meaning of a statement differs from the meaning that the words appear to express.
Irony of situation involves an incongruity between what is expected or intended and what actually occurs.
Dramatic irony is an effect produced by a narrative in which the audience knows more about present or future circumstances than a character in the story.

Examples & Observations:
"It is a fitting irony that under Richard Nixon, launder became a dirty word."
(William Zinsser)

"I'm aware of the irony of appearing on TV in order to decry it, so don't bother pointing that out."
(Sideshow Bob, The Simpsons)

What you said was not ironic in the least. What you said was possibly sarcastic, but that's different. It also wasn't amusing or clever.

You also don't appear to know how to read. As you've quoted me above, I said I still don't think jeff should have outed your employer, I just told you to get over it already unless you think it did you some serious harm. I also specifically said I didn't have a problem with you posting from outside DC -- I just found it amusing (and sad for you) that you are wasting your time on a parenting website 3000 miles away and said something of that sort. There are plenty of useful posts from parents all over the world. I just find it so hilarious that you give a crap about this website. I also find it a little bit funny that Jeff continues to engage with you, as you're clearly a sour (and remarkably dull) troll, but you're calling him out, just like you just called me out, and when someone calls a person out it's hard not to respond. Especially when the person is as dumb of a bunny as you are. Seriously, it's like kicking a three-legged dog, so I think I'm going to have to take my leave of this forum.

Seriously, banker person, get a life. Sorry to say, but you must be extreeeeeeeeeeeemely bored (almost as bored as you are boring). It must be hard work reposting and cutting and pasting all of these edits. But maybe this is your 15 minutes in fame. "word is getting out" about your controversial thread. You're really improving the world, there, west coast! Ha haahahahahaha!

FYI -- I got the 'irony' of your mayo post, even though 'irony' may be the wrong word. You were equating the inanity of the original post to a post asking if you should open a jar of mayo with the seal broken. Also, just FYI, I don't think your INANE comment comes close to some of the offensive posts on this site sometimes but I also don't understand why you can't take Jeff's word for it that your posts were originally deleted because he thought they came from a spambot, which started this whole thing.

The "Mayo" post never said anything about the seal being broken. It wasn't a dilemma about opening a compromised jar of mayo. It was about making a decision anyone can make without having to ask someone about it. So I don't think you really got what I was going for, which is fine. But should I be allowed to post that without the site admin "outing" me? I think so. That's what this is all about.

Wow, you are difficult. Yes, i got it, i got it -- i just didn't bother memorizing your mayo post. But i did get the gist of it. It is INANE to ask what to do about an avon party invitation and it is INANE to ask whether you should open a jar of mayo. Correct?

I am not The Banker. But, You yourself seem to have a load of time on your hands, as well. I guess that makes it okay since you're wasting time IN DC and not the west coast. I guess DC time wasting is a lot more tolerated.

Jeff,

If I was you, I would not engage banker any further. At the end of the day, it is your house, and she is a visitor. You have the right to kick her out.

More importantly, the banker derives some sort of pleasure out of this whole exchange, and it doesn't appear as if any good has come of it. Let her go. Let her go pick fights on other threads and disrupt the intent and reason for their being.

Well done. I have followed this thread over the past two days. Banker is very good, and her logic almost holds water until you weigh in. Your responses remind me why I appreciate and value this site. So. . .I am considering wearing a t-shirt that reads "I heart Jsteele." On the metro, at Starbucks, etc.

I think you find there is something to what I'm saying and it's just mentally easier to sail to calmer waters. You appreciate and value this site because jsteele is your protector against unpolite responses. You know, sometimes the best advice you're going to get is from someone that forgoes niceties and is brutally honest. Now, the posts that were removed and mine which resulted in my employment info being posted perhaps didn't have the absolute best intentions but neither were they so offensive as to be censored. Again, we're all adults here. I'd much rather be able to make my own decisions about which posts to read and which to skip rather than having them go through the filter of the site admin. Block spam/hate speech/threats. Don't block for being blunt. A really good site admin would have restrained himself better than to 1) post info that really only he has access to and has no business posting as it isn't relevant to anything and is only used as an implied threat; 2) not belittle me about working at a bank (which is doing fine, btw); and 3) apologized when he realized he made a mistake, instead of taunting me. Be above the fray, jsteele.

Anonymous wrote:I love Jeff. I think that as far as site administrators goes, he's the best. He has a moral compass and integrity that I have admired for a long time. Just read his posts. As the owner of the site, I feel he can referee anyway he wants and call out the troublemakers. I'm saying this from the point of view, where I've even been called out by him before. I think he's always fair and he has a tough job keeping some of the peace on the site. He does allow freedom of speech, but even the first ammendment has boundaries. Just because we have freedom doesn't mean we spout off to policemen, teachers, etc. Managers of restaurants kick out people who are unruly. He has a right to censor what he wants if people are trolling. Keep up the good work, Jeff. You rock.

Yes, he can referee anyway he wants. However, when you claim to give the 1st Amendment "great reverence" but remove replies and post employment information over posts that were too "mean", it's duplicitous. By the way, spouting off to policemen, teachers, etc. IS a right that you have. You'll suffer whatever consequences comes from it but you have the RIGHT to do it. Also, unruly customers is more of a property issue than 1st Amendment. Censor away but at least be upfront and honest about it.

I'm the poster that said Jeff has a right to referee anyway he wants. Look, the one that disputed that made my point. You do, under 1st ammendment rights, have the right to spout off, but face the consequences. That's what I'm saying. You can spout off here anyway you want also. Just face the consequences. He is the owner of the site, like the owner of a restaurant. If someone is unruly face the music. This poster tried to dispute me and made my point for me. Once again, Keep up the good work. It was two snarky posts after the poster was informed that such posts were unwanted and two previous posts had been removed. Why can't you acknowledge these simple facts?

The "personal information" is the name of a west coast bank that has 500 employees. Why are you and the banker so concerned about it. If it is supposed to be secret, she should post from someplace else.

If you don't want people to know that you post from a bank, don't post from a bank. Duh.

Bank tycoon here. It's me, jsteele, but on a different IP. Irony poster...you seem pretty confident that my mayo post doesn't fit that first definition of irony. Makes perfect sense to me but clearly, it has upset you enough to attempt to attack me in your juvenile way. Thanks for your input and your backpedalling.

1st Amendment expert...firstly, learn how to spell "amendment". That's twice now you've gotten it wrong so don't blame it on a typo. Secondly, you werent saying anything about facing the consequences. You were saying the 1st Amendment has limits. That's not one of the "limits" in the amendment. I'm not claiming that what I said was any way protected by it. I'm only pointing out that your dear site admin claims to give great reverence to it but really doesn't back that up in action. It's understandable that you'd feel protective of him. He's what you're used to and he'll be here long after I'm gone. That doesn't mean he's a great site admin. While he does post some really insightful and well-thought out things (see, I can give a compliment when it is due), he can also act impulsively and and inconsistently. All I've asked for is some insight into what constitutes the difference between snark and inappropriate and Ive yet to see one. I also have yet to see one single reason why my input is second class because it comes from the west coast, despite repeated requests for both. Are all east coasters this evasive?

jsteele, nobody but yourself had access to that info. Do not even pretend that was anything other than a veiled threat. You STILL refuse to see that there was no conspiracy here. Just one friend giving another a headsup about a topic in a forum. It was NOT an attempt to disrupt the site. If that were the aim, do you think I'd present such an east target? I'd be all over this site causing problems but I'm not and I have not. But Im coming to the conclusion (via my
thick skull) that no amount of persuasion is going to get you to be more judicious in how you discipline or instruct your users. It is indistinct and I think you like it that way. It's your site, though. This has definitely gone on too long.

A day in the life of a couple of Pacific Northwest Free Expressionists:

The scene: A quiet, well-lit office. A woman sits at a desk. Behind her, a partially shaded window reveals drizzling rain outside. She looks up to check her Twitter feed and sees a new tweet from her friend across town:

Banker's Friend #1 (via Twitter): Check out www.dcurbanmom.com. Cool discussion re Avon invite.

Banker's Friend #2 (via Twitter): Just posted "Fire her immediately". Bitchin!

Banker's Friend #1 (via Twitter): I just told her to join the witness protection. I rock, totally.

Banker (via IM): Where the fuck are your messages. I don't see shit.

Banker's Friend #1 (via IM): They were just there. Where the fuck are they?

Banker (via IM): I bet that dick jsteele censored them.

Banker's Friend #1 (via IM): I'll start a new thread asking for an explanation of the guidelines for censoring posts.

Banker (via IM): Cool. I'm sure that there are very well-established and easily-understood guidelines that include an appeals process and an 18 step formula for determining the appropriateness of a post. I'd expect a 27-page report explaining in detail and including screen captures of what led to the removal of these messages of monumental importance. I'm not sure the free world can survive if we can't tell people to join the witness protection program.

Banker's Friend #1 (via IM): That bastard jsteele admits to deleting my message and is not even apologetic about it. He says inappropriate messages shouldn't be posted in threads like that.

Banker (via IM): That can't be right. There must be a mistake. Things just can't happen this way. The discussion about how to respond to an Avon part invite is just too important to not benefit from our insight. Hold on, I'll see what I can do.

Banker (via DCUM post): Hey OP, your post in inane.

Banker (via DCUM post): I have an issue with a mayo jar.

Banker's Friend #1 (via DCUM post): Make home made mayo.

Banker's Friend #1 (via IM): "Make mayo at home". I kill myself.

Banker (via IM): This thread is the best. I can't believe how cool we are. People are going to piss themselves reading our posts.

Banker's Friend #1 (via IM): That asshole jsteele just posted the name of your bank.

Banker: (via IM): Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo

Banker's Friend #1 (via IM): Hey, I'm sorry. Really. How will you continue to live. Is there anything I can do?

Banker: (via IM): I feel so, so ... so violated. I feel like I've been striped naked and forced to walk through the public square.

Banker's Friend #1 (via IM): Gosh, the name of your bank! How could someone stoop so low? That narrows you down to one of 500 people on the complete opposite coast. Why, oh why must life be so cruel?

Banker: (via IM): I'll get him. Just you wait. I'll spend the rest of the week posting repeated rants about how jsteele has no respect for the 1st Amendment. This will not stand! It will not stand, I say!

Banker's Friend #1 (via IM): I'll be right there with you. When things get tough, you can lean on me. When you threaten to leave after every third post, I'll inflame things again. Together we will fight for truth, justice, and the right to tell DCUM posters that their messages are inane. It starts here. It starts now. Now let's get typing.

To be continued...

Banker is SO ridiculous. I'll give you points for tenacity and not giving up, but you should've takent the hint at fuck off. There are regular posts started as to how nasty this site is and how Jeff should do something about it. He likes it the way it is, so he doesn't. He deleted your posts (explained by him over and over again) and you've decided to debate him about it. Bottom line is there's nothing you can do or say to bring your unnecessary posts back or get Jeff to apologize for deleting them. Just give it up already.

I'm the one you were correcting about the spelling. Wow. You have just taken away any credibility you might have had in illustrating your point about not wanting to nitpick or get off topic. Instead of listening to someone's explanation, you decide to correct my spelling. You don't comprehend very well. You didn't get Jeff's points or mine, because your too busy have this "my shit don't stink attitude". Once again, do you do any work I hope my bankers are not spending all day on parenting sites. How bout pleasing your boss, and do something constructive. Once again. I will explain it again, Jeff owns the site, and if someone is out of line, which you have proven you are, he can do what he wants. I went back to reread how you entered this thread and I can understand what in the world you thought you might be adding. Your whole attitude was to shit on someone's concern, even if you didn't find it a real concern. You probably don't get along with many people around you and need to find sites like these to get people to listen to you if even for a few minutes. By the way, I thought you said good by along time ago.

Okay Jeff, this vignette absolutely made my day. Seriously. What a great way to make lemonade out of lemons. (Or mayo out of bad eggs.) VERY funny and quite possibly my favorite post yet. Thank you for being who you are.

Sincerely,

Cole O'Shea (who happens to works at an association of over 1500 people in DC, but will gladly self-identify)

Now Ms. Banker, please go away. Jeff had you beat a long time ago.

Not the banker. But, way to backtrack or go back on what you said. You first didn't agree with Jeff posting the place of bankers employment, but now you say it's okay. Interesting.
