People may criticize papers like the Daily Mail, the Daily News or the NY Post, but their reporters are scrappy and know who to work the police beat. Sure, they can get it wrong but they often get it right when others miss the story. In situations like this, a lot of night court experience beats cutting one's journalistic teeth on some Ivy League campus paper.

I am not willing to say the police are focusing on him because he's black. Clearly, there's cause to be suspicious of him and his involvement. I AM leery of assuming he did it without seeing or hearing the evidence they have against him because the "big scary black man abducted and killed a white girl" trope makes me deeply uncomfortable. If he did it- zero sympathy (duh). But black men are consistently the most wrongly accused group in this country. Look at the language in the law they used to charge him with: "intent to defile." GUARANTEED that is language from the Jim Crow days when black men were murdered for looking at a white woman wrong. And frankly, he doesn't fit the profile of what this crime looks like. Serial kidnapper, rapist and murderer of white girls? That's a white man crime. Understandably, there's exceptions. I am cautious to assign immediate blame to the first suspect without hearing what evidence they have against him.
