There is excellent data showing that most of the children placed in AAP or gifted programs revert to norm on the IQ scale by the time they graduate high school. The vast majority of kids, those without pushy parents, are suffering as the best teachers and resources are skimmed off for these supposedly "exceptional" children. Remedial classes and gen ed have been combined to free up AP teachers. |

Anecdotally i believe kids do revert back. Part of the issue to me is keeping kids engaged in school to develop into lifelong learners. If they are not intellectually challenged appropriately early on, they may tune out. This applies To every kind of Learner. |
Anecdotally, I don't believe that truly gifted kids "revert back." I think that bright but nowhere near gifted kids who are very mature and focused for their age will end up with artificially high scores on the NNAT and CogAT. They're also more likely to impress the teachers by excelling at the "rote skills" (i.e. simple arithmetic, spelling, pretty handwriting). So, they get placed into AAP. Similarly bright or even brighter kids who are more immature or who have poor executive function will screw around or lose interest in the standardized test, thus scoring lower. They're also less likely to impress the teacher and less likely to have advanced looking work samples. Eventually, though, the maturity and executive function gap closes, and the raw intelligence matters more. Just as an example, I know a lot of kids who were placed into advanced/AAP math as 2nd or 3rd graders who were excellent at following processes and memorizing math facts. They scored very highly on the school's exams even without really having a great number sense or a real understanding of math. Eventually, those kids struggled with advanced math and were surpassed by kids who struggled a bit more with the rote arithmetic but innately have much more "math intelligence." |
revert to the norm on IQ? How is that possible? You mean their IQs changed after grades 3-8? (like the AAP IQ's went down and the Gen. Ed. IQs went up?) I really would like to see this "excellent data." Post this data please. |

Not that this matters, but my kid tested in to AAP with no prep but I do not except this child to apply to TJ. At the revelant time, I expect we will continue to think the typical HS experience offered at our base is best choice for our family. |
Not all AAP kids go on to TJ. But practically all TJ kids are from AAP. |

This is believable (at least for those of us that have not created an identity around having an AAP kid), you can teach test taking skills which will improve scores on standardized tests, including IQ tests. But the real Intelligence Quotient is not in the ability to take a test well, it is in the ability to answer the questions without prepping in advance. I feel really bad for parents who feel that if their kid is not AAP the school is wrong, the tests was unfair, their kid did not get enough sleep, or whatever other excuse they feel the need to come up with. AAP is not the key to success, good parenting with adequate emphasis on getting a good education is. If your kid is "gifted" (which is a curse as much as a blessing) a bad nights sleep is not going to make a difference, the flu would not make a difference. Gifted kids stick out whether they are teachers pet always needing confirmation they are smart (this is rare in my experience) or the kid who barely pays attention and absorbs all of the information while doodling, reading a book, or otherwise ignoring the lesson. If you have one of these kids you know the parenting challenges they bring, especially if you have another child who is not gifted. If your kid needs to study for AAP class tests they are not gifted. If they don't study get A's and the teacher has to call you in because they are never focused in class and while they are not directly disruptive other kids see the smartest kid in class reading a book during the lecture and that sets a bad example, your kid is likely gifted. If the teachers tell you how they are struggling to come up with ways to challenge your child because she finishes the "challenging" problems too quickly in class, the ones that the other kids are taking home for homework, your kid is gifted. If the AAP teacher requests a conference to try to come up with a strategy to keep your son challenged and engaged, your child is gifted. A gifted child has special needs that are mostly unmet unless you are lucky enough to have a teacher that appreciates your child's needs, this means the teacher has a special needs child of their own most often (meaning a gifted child or a child with a disability), though we have had teachers that made an effort that just liked the challenge our child posed. |
How dare you let your kid test for AAP without prep, what kind of example are you setting for parents with really smart kids that need to pay for higher scores and have their kid prep so that they can barely qualify and then drag down the AAP class quality because they should not be there in the first place? Sorry, I meant the kids who are truly brilliant but who don't test well and need a better testing environment and practice to excel on the testing, and are only struggling at the AAP center because the teacher doesn't recognize that little Bobby is a genius. |

Man yall are so stupid
Look I'm in my 30s-40s now probably like most of you I was in the equivalent of Gifted and Talented in elementary school and I am assuming most of you probably were too and guess what. IT DID ABSOLUTELY NOTHING. NOTHING. I even was a grade ahead in math and again NOTHING NO IMPACT on anything longterm. Who F^&*ING cares what grade you take Algebra I in And for the bleeding heart liberals out there. Keeping the smart kids with everyone else actually INCREASES the "smartness" of the other kids in the classroom and DOESN"T harm your precious snowflakes What will harm your precious snowflakes..... obsessing about this AAP and TJ bs. Let your kid have a normal childhood. |
