You mean anchor babies?

No, I mean US citizens.

Why would US citizens not speak English for the first 5yrs of their life? Sorry but I am sick of millions of MCPS dollars going to ignorant people's kids so we can teach them English and play catch up. Learn English and then enter schools. ESL funding is killing our schools.

Amazing how generations later, people forget that most of us came from immigrant families - most arrived speaking no English or were very poor (or both). Their ancestors worked hard and reaped the benefits of this society to make a better life and now generations removed, they have forgotten their roots. Note that immigrants work damn hard - harder than most Americans do - to make the better life.

Most arrived from "legal" immigrant families.

That's because they got here before the Immigration Act of 1924. It's easy to arrive as a legal immigrant when there are very few laws restricting immigration.

Also, of course, every immigrant who arrived after 1492 is an illegal immigrant.

Things have changed. The US doesn't need an influx of uneducated, unskilled labor like it did back in the day; there's very little way for them to work hard and move up.

Immigration is the only way the US young population is growing. Look what is going on in Japan with an aging population and few to support it. We need immigrants. We need them to be educated. Some day that immigrant in going to be paying in to the SS system that you are living off of.

If there weren't any jobs for them here, they wouldn't be coming.

I seriously doubt the kinds of illegal immigrants were getting now are going to be doing much in the way of supporting anybody; how much do you think minimum wage jobs pay for SS? Are you aware that 25% of the Hispanic kids in MoCo don't graduate from HS? That's with many, many millions diverted to help them out.

Right, I completely forgot about the 100% employment in the non-college educated population in the US. My bad. Or is it just that illegal immigrants will work for much less? Shouldn't we be enforcing laws in order to benefit our own citizens vs. citizens of other countries?

It is shocking how many low minded prejudiced comments are on this thread - far more disappointing than I could ever be in MCPS!!

Do you think that undocumented people aren't working? (And paying taxes?)

But yes, undocumented workers are willing to work for much less. So you're in favor of requiring employers paying wages high enough to interest documented workers in the work?

$12 billion per year, net.

Illegal immigrants pay ZERO into SS or any taxes. Over 80% work under the table. The rest have stolen SS# numbers. Fun!

I am in favor of making companies pay huge penalties for hiring illegal immigrants and all of that now money goes to deporting them.

The Social Security Administration says that you're wrong.

I'm also interested in how they manage to avoid paying any taxes. Maybe they don't ever buy anything?

OK. And you are also in favor of paying a lot more for the goods and services they're currently producing, right? US citizens aren't generally willing to work in poultry plants or mow lawns for $7.25 an hour, for example, or to pick tomatoes for $60 for 11 hours of work.

Absolutely, as long as we actually enforced immigration laws. That means exporting illegal immigrants and going after the companies that employ them. WRT illegal immigrants working and paying taxes, I'm sure that many do, but they're not making much money so I seriously doubt the taxes they pay come close to covering the resources they're using. It costs 14K to educate a kid in MoCo; it would take a pretty hefty salary to cover that.
