Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS)
| If he's in the 99th percentile for math 2 or 3 grades up, then by definition, there are very, very few children like him in MCPS. MCPS has 150,000+ students. MCPS just can't meet every single student's individual need. It would be great if MCPS could, but MCPS can't. I don't mean this to sound unsympathetic, because I'm not. In your situation, I would consider hiring a math tutor. |
| Prior to 2.0 there was 2 and 3 grade level acceleration for math. Now this is gone. Too many kids were accelerated. I get it. For some kids though this is unfortunate and disappointing. I do find it odd that this has been eliminated in this day and age where math and science are as important as ever. |
| And I would guess most of us think our kids are the ones that should be accelerated.. |
Well, compared to the old curriculum everybody is accelerated one year (I.e. the default is now Algebra in 8th) and compacted math allows for what would have been a 2 year acceleration (Algebra in 7th). The only thing currently missing in 2.0 is Algebra in 6th, which I honestly question the value of. |
I think we all get that she is making a point. (Good luck trying to "visit" the school....) |
Before 2.0 my DC was pulled out of class with enough kids from other classrooms of the same grade to form a small class in and of itself. It was a great solution for the kids who needed more than they were getting by being in their assigned classrooms. There were many kids like this, not just my DC. I don't know why that would bother anyone. |
The teachers made those decision, not the parents. |
There are math groups in my child's classroom now, under 2.0. |
And then the parents complained about the decisions until the parents got their way. |
It doesn't bother parents. It bothers MCPS staff. Big difference. There is one MCPS staffer who posts that anything MCPS does is grand and any criticism is invalid. I've been reading through threads and its pretty obvious that she is one poster. |
|
I love reading these threads b/c the responses from so many neurotic parents just validate that I'm normal.
Go ahead and freak out b/c your 2nd grader isn't doing algebraic expressions. My kids are learning, and most importantly, they're happy. |
b/c you have all the time in the world to analyze writing style? must be nice |
|
No need for deep analysis you are very obvious.
MCPS quality is terrible. You can call parents tiger moms, neurotic or whatever derogative term you choose. At the end of the day, your system sucks and your performance is horrible. MCPS is on par with the DMV. Actually, this is an insult to the DMV as they have been improving their service. |
It's amazing how you figured out that there is only one poster, who works for MCPS, and is a woman. How did you do it? |
| Or maybe the poster who always seems to claim his/her child is very advanced and being denied a good education is always the same poster??? |
