I agree with PP that most Americans don't want to work these jobs. I have distant family on MD's Eastern Shore. Their kids think they are too good for agri jobs so they don't even try to get them. They sit around after school and all summer because the fast food and retail jobs go fast (and often to adults).
In their defense, I think that the pay rate would have to be double before I'd want to process a chicken 8 hours a day.

It all sounds nifty but it isn't sustainable if you don't want to tank the economy to depression era levels. For US to have a living wage to support all those jobs would increase prices dramatically and halt spending. Of course - if everyone in the middle and upper classes lose their jobs as we fall into a deep depression - maybe good 'ole true blue blooded Americans would lower themselves to work those low level jobs that they currently think are "below them"

A lot of these jobs are low pay but actually require years of expertise to do with the efficiency that a business would require of their employees. You can't stick a welfare recipient in a field and expect them to know what's a weed and what's a seedling no matter how motivated they are.

Again - I think you need to take an economics class - and take it devoid of your political views just so you understand some basic facts. You are mixing up various policies and their resulting impact. Each of these policies will have politics behind them - but you should understand the underlying mechanisms if you are going to start spewing about them.

For example, minimum wage laws will generally not apply to "illegal immigrants" because they cannot "legally" work and therefore their employers who are hiring them "illegally" are unlikely to abide by any living wage legislation.

adding to PP's reply - are you also going to transplant the welfare recipients with children out to the remote locations where the immigrants work? immigrants who have left children and families behind so they can be mobile and migrate with the crop seasons throughout the year?
