Eaton Thrown Under the Bus

The Mall is federal land. Absolutely no go. The environmental Impact Statement alone would take ten years.

I've never thought the Kennedy center was very attractive. Why don't they tear that down and build a new HS there?

It is doubtful that DC would build a new school in Ward 3 given the underutilization of other high schools throughout the city. In that case, Hardy would leap-frog over other neighborhoods that feed into Wilson in order to go to a high school to the East.

And let's be real. The only city-owned site of any size west of Rock Creek is Duke Ellington (which has a building but no campus with fields), And the decision seems to have been made to keep Ellington where it is, despite it's non-central location and the fact that it is no where near the Metro. The Third District police station site on Idaho Ave, would work for an elementary school but not for a HS, and you'd have to evict the cops. The logical conclusion is that the "new" high school to which DCPS vaguely refers is no where near Hardy.

Actually the OLD Hardy building, also formerly occupied by the Lab school, sits on an enormous Lot on Foxhall Road. There would need to be a huge addition, but the space for that and playing fields exists! It would be a great location for kids in Palisades, Georgetown, Glover Park, Burleith, Foggy Bottom, Even Dupont. But no metro nearby though an easy bus ride from Foggy Bottom.

+1. The old Hardy site is over twice the size of the current Ellington site, 5+ acres vs. 2+ acres.

I have a child at Eaton and Deal. I like everyone would prefer to keep the current option of being able to choose between the two, but I am not going to picket for keeping Deal. Deal is getting too large, I have seen problems over the last two years in many respect with how it can do small things, serve lunch, provide access to computers and libraries. But then I have never been someone who takes every issue as a reason to move to the burbs.

This is VERY well put. Reasonable parents like you will help make these changes viable, for example under the B plan. I really think once the IB parents get involved, Hardy will be fantastic. Eaton itself and Hearst have had dramatic turnarounds recently, I think Hardy will do the same.

YES there is no question that the B plan or any plan that even the one that has a the JKLM cluster assigned to both Deal and Hardy will bring Hardy up. As a Eaton district parent I support that. But that will NOT happen unless Wilson is guaranteed for Hardy. People will NOT go to Hardy, and work to make it great, if they aren't guaranteed a Wilson spot. They will all go private or move out of the District. As the parent of a sixth grader I can say without total certainty that if we have to do a lottery for high school we're going to Montg. County (or private if we can get in). No question whatsoever. And as soon as I know that is a likely scenario my contributions to Deal and work to make it great will cease (I'll be house hunting or working more to make more for private school tuition). The city-wide HS concept will do nothing but bring DOWN the good middle schools, not to mention Wilson and even the specialized schools by draining people from the District.

Eaton and Oyster were always the most vulnerable. They're both closer to Hardy than Deal anyway. Even if there weren't a re-alignment of the boundaries in the political works, it always made sense to anyone who can read a map.

Last poster near, meant to say WITH total certainty.

Given that Hardy, which looks to be turning into a fine option, is already a designated option for Eaton, and that one of the stated objectives for the boundary rewrite was to reduce overcrowding at Deal, I would like to cordially invite any Eaton parent who did not see this coming to our weekly poker game.

And it is a lot closer to Deal that is Shepherd ES...., which apparently will never move from Deal. It's in the Constitution.

There is no other MS anywhere near Shepherd. That's one big difference. Eaton can go to Hardy which is closer. Shepherd would go where? Eliot HIne?

American University is moving its law school to the Tenley Town campus and that superfresh off 48th an Yuma is closed. That space is about the size of Wilson.

For shepherd, the closest 6-8th grades are at Takoma Ed campus.

And it has a tenant with a long-term lease. Don't let wishful thinking make you stupid.

Which is not an MS. What is the closest MS? Not Ed campus - actual MS?

And what are they doing with all of the law school's playing fields, green space, auditorium, pool etc?

Eaton's feeding into Hardy isn't the main issue. The question is where do the Hardy students go after middle school? Plan B says Wilson with this vague caveat of a new high school option if Wilson is overcrowded (which is looking more likely by the year based on IB populations at Deal and it's feeders).
