| Does anyone have tips? Now that I read this I’m craving pumpkin bread. Should I put it through a sieve? |

There is something in the rind of a pumpkin that is gritty, if you scrape it too close to the outside. IDK what it is but I know what you're all referring to. I made a delicious copycat Starbuck's pumpkin loaf last weekend and alas it's gritty, but we're eating it. Carefully, because I can't afford a broken tooth! Please respond with more info if anyone finds out what's wrong with canned pumpkin.

| I like Wegman's canned pumpkin. |
| I grew up eating my Mom's pumpkin pies. There was no grit ever (I'm 64). She always used the canned pumpkin of Libbys and their recipe from the can. I don't know why pumpkin pies from everywhere are reporting grit, but something has changed from 'the good old days'. I like the flavor of COSTCO pumpkin pie, but I think I'm going to have to switch to Apple pies. I've had the pumpkin grit for too many years now. |
Why did you revive this thread and post? |
This post has been revived every year since 2013; people are aware that it's old and revived and are discussing the ongoing issue. The real question is, since you aren't interested in the issue, is why did YOU post? |
| ‘Tis the season. |
| Did anyone see that Libby's changed the recipe this year? Anyone try the new version? |

Bought a Costco pumpkin pie. Tried two slices, both were gritty and off putting. Talked to a friend who also said she threw hers out due to grit.
It is like crunching on sand. Blech! |
| our costco pumpkin pie was not gritty. sounds gross though. |
| What on earth has happened with canned pumpkin. I'm 65 and until the last few years, there was never any grit or sand in my pies. It's not from ingredients I add to make the pies, it is in the pumpkin in the can. I scooped out a spoon of the pumpkin to "test" it and it's got grit or sand in it. And it's not just one "brand". I have tried Libby's, Festal, HyVee and ShurFine store brands, and they all have it. I can't find any other brands to try in my area and have given up. I am really surprised that more people aren't complaining about foreign material/sand in cans of pumpkin and I won't buy it anymore. |
| I have been making pumpkin muffins for years all with that extra crunch. I too thought it was sugar or baking powder and am shocked to learn it is dirt. I am not making them next year. |
| Pumpkins made in China. |
| 1/1/2020 We usually make a peanut butter pumpkin muffins and now and then it has a bit of grit. I finally figured that it is the Libby's canned pumpkin. I have used Libby's forever but no more. We are going to try Whole Foods Organic 365 Everyday brand tomorrow. Hopefully there won't be any grit. Annoyed |
| Have started buying Trader Joe’s canned pumpkin and no grit! I always thought it was my nutmeg. |
