For those who do not know, Christmas and Christ are in the Koran, so Christmas is not an alien holiday. Christmas predates Christianity. Dec 25 is the birt date of an ancient Roman God. And even the barbarians further north had a mid winter festival at the time of the winter solstice. This is an international standard for vacation time. Schools cannot let all teachers vacation when they want to.
Even American jews celebrate a chinese-restaurant day.
Spring break in montgomery county is designed around the jewish passover more than the easter.

It is not enough to merely say they are immigrants and therefore must assimilate, the land must meet them half way

I can't even visit a Muslim nation because I will not assimilate.

yes you can

Who was that woman from Europe who I think is still in a Dubai jail because she reported being raped? She worked for Janet Jackson and her husband.

Good God the panic and hysteria from people at the mere mention of Muslims is always amusing.

Also, OP, you could have at least spelled "Muslims" correctly in your title! :-/

And a BIG lol at this being a Christian nation... our forefathers left England because of zealots like you.

Are you taking your daughter to Dubai anytime soon?

You don't sound like you've ever travelled outside of the US...nobody expects a tourist who is visiting another country to assimilate. The only thing anyone anywhere (Muslim or nonMuslim) expects is respect for their country, their culture, and their values. Not exactly unreasonable.

I am actually planning a trip there, yes. Is that a problem?

At least a good dozen times, starting in childhood. I lost count a long time ago. But thanks anyway for a nice try at insulting me. Hope it made you feel better about yourself.

Schools are closed ONLY because of the number of students who would be out in addition to the number of teachers and a lack of substitutes to cover (and expense of substitutes for a significantly reduced number of students). There are several religious Jewish holidays where the system does NOT close. For that matter, even for the highest holy days, only schools (students/teachers) are closed. Twelve month employees (principals, central office, etc...) are not off unless they choose to take leave.

Although, as far as I know, MCPS has never done a count of this. Certainly where I live, there are far more Muslim students (also Hindu students) than Jewish students. I don't think that there are any Jewish teachers either.

I am sure that MCPS will start to close on Muslim holidays if the time comes that there are significant numbers of staff/students out on a given holiday. It's also not a matter of doing a "count" as it isn't "how many Jewish teachers/students?"....it's a matter of a pattern of absences.

But this is kind of a self-fulfilling proposition. After all, students can't be absent on Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, because there isn't any school on Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. And students who would prefer not to have school on Eid al-Adha and Eid al-Fitr but go to school because there is school also aren't absent.

What?! What a silly statement. If one values the importance of observing any given holiday, they will do so. I don't observe Yom Kippur only because school is closed. If school weren't closed, I would take leave.

What did he do? I missed it....

George's dad from Seinfeld invented Festivus. It was Festivus for the rest of us.

Lol, sorry. Thought you meant Councilmember George Leventhal, who held a press conference yesterday in solidarity with this cause. I thought he must have said something amusing.

Where do you live? I'm moving there (Muslim kid in a part of MoCo with very few other Muslims).

Well, "respect for their values" means it's OK to be charged with sex outside of marriage after being gang raped. No thanks.

Yes, events in the United Arab Emirates are certainly very relevant to a discussion of whether MCPS should close on two major Muslim holidays. (And by "certainly very relevant", I mean "completely irrelevant".)

You would. But you are not everybody. Other people wouldn't. How many other people wouldn't? We don't know, and we can't find out, because the schools are closed on Yom Kippur.

There are two peacocks fighting about who travels more outside of the united states and where they dare travel. Typical for DCUM. I don't think either of their feathers are all that pretty.
