Mulsims want schools closed on their holidays

Yep... people have done horrible things through the ages.. we have had the crusades but the basic tenants of Christianity support good morals. The Navy shooter was Buddist but no one thinks Buddism was the problem. I don't know too much about Islam. One person's rights end where another person's begin. If there were a substantial number of Muslims in MCPS, I would feel differently but I do take offense by a very small minority trying to convince the majority they should not go to school in solidarity. If I lived in an area where only 1 percent was Christian, I wouldn't expect Christmas off and I think it would be arrogant to make such a request.

It's ridiculous to be offended by such a request. Either honor it or ignore it.

How is the request "arrogant"? It's a request, not a demand. If you don't think there is a need for Muslims to speak up and request a day off for their holiday, chances are you are not the one being directly affected by it. Those of us who are not Christians don't complain about Christmas season and the onslaught of Christmas related things being shoved in our faces starting in October, but as soon as other religions try to gain some equality, the whining from the conservative Christians starts...whine whine whine. You got yours, now you are getting offended when others ask for theirs. I would call THAT arrogant.

Well i can say that in Lebanon for instance they have christian holidays off because of the significant christian population even though the muslims are the majority.

My relatives in Egypt, who work for government, get Christmas off. Those who work in private industry do not. The hotels and big stores, like in a City Stars mall, are all decorated for Christmas. I do not know about public schools. My (Muslim) nieces and nephews go to private schools. The American school is off for a winter break that includes both the Western and Coptic Christmas. My Muslim relatives celebrate Christmas with their Coptic friends. The Coptic Christian population is about 10-12% I think.

This thread will keep you very busy, I am afraid. Oh wait. I'm supposed to be afraid that this is the gateway drug to Muslim rule in MoCo and beyond. No time to worry about you.

We went to Turkey and Pakistan around Christmas time 2 years back and they had Christmas trees and decorations at the stores. Not sure how many people actually celebrate it, but I was surprised to see that it was a pretty mainstream holiday (in Turkey at least).

This thread is way too long to read all the way through. Most of the comments have nothing to do with school holidays.

So excuse me if this opinion has already been expressed, but at what point are the kids supposed to have a full week of school? Muslim kids are granted an excused absence if they don't go to school for religious holidays. Not all Jewish and Christian holidays are observed by MCPS and they have the same right to have an excused absence on religious grounds if they so wished.

I personally think there are too many holidays, teacher work days, conferences, and half days now. If the Muslims want some of the current holidays taken off the calendar, I would support that. I don't think we need to add more.

I oppose it. Who's going to pay for the child care of other non-muslim kids on that day. Is there a place to sign petition against it?

MCPS is going to have the same number of school days with Eid or without. The number of school days is set, so if they take this day they'll add another one somewhere. You'll still pay the same number of days fo childcare.

Muslims shouldn't get the holidays off unless the Jews get ALL of their religious holidays off. This would include the first two and last two days of Sukkot, the second day of Rosh Hashanna, the first two and last two days of Passover, among others.

Gazette article just screams "resume padding" by these couple HS students trying to put down some community service or "leadership" bits into their college essays. Please.
