What the heck is up with these exburb boosters?

Can we set a baseline and then work from there. Baseline - If you live in the exburbs is most likely because you can't afford DC or close-in suburbs. Now that we understand most of your frustration i.e. money we can understand you better and why you bash those of us with better resources. No one chooses to live in Dunn Loring.

OP, if you are still there, what were you referring to exactly? Are you annoyed with all the threads being sidetracked to discuss PH, Dunn Loring, Tysons, Mosaic, and the likes, usually spawned by the aggressive boosters? Or are you trying to start a war between the city/closer burbs and the more distant burbs not understanding why people would choose to live further out.

If it's #1, I wholeheartedly agree, if it's #2, then I don't see the point, people choose what is convenient for them, there is no mystery here.

What really is tiring is another one of these threads:

OP: I am interested in parts of FC near metro zoned for Haycock elementary, what are your experiences with this area, which communities do you recommend, or what do you think about this home for sale, fair price or not?

Other Posters: The price is about right for the area, but house needs work.

Booster: Why not just look into PH, it's just right there 5 min away and the school is much better than Mclean and prices are cheaper. (I am being more civil than some of these posts)

OP: I have looked at this area and others, but we really narrowed it down to this one, thanks.

Booster: You know PH will be closer to Tysons and Mosaic district is the bomb, you will be rich if you buy an SFH there, it will be like a new Arlington.

OP: I've been to PH, but didn't like the area at this point, although understand the potential

Booster: What? It will be awesome, look at this new house for 900K, isn't that so much better than a brick shit shack you are going to get in FC? Where else can you get new house like this?

Other PPs: we like our shit shacks and we hate PH, go away PH booster!

Marshall Lady: OP, don't you know Marshall is rated higher than Mclean HS? Look at these ratings! You are making a mistake.

Other PPs: these ratings are false, we all know this, marshal lady go away!

Rat Lady: OP, this house you posted is

a dump that needs to be demolished. Just admit it you cannot afford to live in this area. I hate all these people that live in brick shit houses and breed rats all over my hood, rats are running across my backyard and into my patio door as I speak!

This isn't accurate. I don't live in Dunn Loring but I do live in the outer burbs of MD. We could afford 1.5M when we moved 9 years ago which would have been fine in DC. I didn't want to deal with the hassle of private schools. I have a rat phobia (we have coyotes, foxes and other stuff out here but no rats). We wanted a big yard which wasn't available at any price in DC. My kids love riding horses which is right down the road. (Not willing to build a stable but we could if we wanted to...). We love the outdoors and prefer living where its right outside. Its nice that there are a good number of kids at the bus stop, neighborhood friends even though the lots are large, and no one wears ballet flats

What the Hell is a Dunn Loring?

Is that anywhere near Arlington? Or Farlington? Or Nearlington?

For some, it is about money, but not all. And you seem to think those with more money are somehow better, which we all know to be complete bullshit.

Many of us live in the exurbs BECAUSE WE LIKE IT. We don't want to live closer in, and either have jobs out here or are willing to commute a little more to live here. If you want the city life, then enjoy it! But the thought that everyone who lives in the suburbs or exurbs has the desire to live in DC or even in the close-in areas in absurd.

Sheesh, if the sedentary lifestyle and stress-filled commute doesn't kill you, the lack of sleep will.

"Sedentary lifestyle"? The same DH I spoke of above is a marathon runner, and is in spectacular shape. Do you know how much time it takes to train for marathons? Let me tell you, it's a lot, and *somehow* even with this commute that some of you think leaves no time for anything else (which is so untrue), he is able to put in the miles and miles -- OUTSIDE, I might add, in the beautiful, open areas near our home -- that it takes to stay in shape for those runs.

The funny thing is that so many people on DCUM go on and on about how many hours they work and how much money they earn, blah, blah...but if they are working all of those hours, how is that less stressful or time-consuming than commuting? If my DH works 40 hours a week and spends a total of 10 hours commuting, he still has more time at home than someone who works more than 50 hours a week. We also don't have a huge mortgage or private school tuitions to stress about, and we don't need two incomes to live comfortably.

Arlington runner here. Can't beat running through the Arlington parks, then downtown DC with the monuments, along the Potomac... all without having to drive

Of course they do. Why would someone who could afford a $900K house in Dunn Loring and works in Tysons or Merrifield prefer Arlington or DC over Dunn Loring? Your baseline is absurd. I don't live in Dunn Loring, and never have, but you're just a tool.

Most of us can afford to live any place we want. We chose the suburbs because we like it.

I have friends with a house in the burbs and an apartment/condo in the city. Their older kids stay during the week to go to private school.

You live in DC because you like it.

I bought a beach house because I love the beach, I would choose to live there over both but that comment is too long. I like to think that is my real house and the one in the burbs is just my house I stay at during the week.

Because working 60+ hours a week and living in a 'gentrifying' (i.e. crime-ridden) neighborhood is absolutely un-stressful.

DH works just inside the beltway and we live in far-out Fairfax County (the horror!). We've lived here for about ten years although we just bought two years ago. I'm unapologetic about the fact that we live out here. Sure, we have to drive a bit if we want to take the kids to the museums... but most of what we need is within a ten minute drive. We paid $350k for our house with an acre for the kids and dogs to run around on and we love it. As for the grills, they weren't allowed in our old tiny further-in condo. Now that we have a huge yard and a big deck, we grill all year long and love having friends and family over to enjoy it with us. Everyone has different priorities so some may not see the perks in what we have but we love it.
