Michelle Obama

Its natural to compare Michelle's speech to Ann's because were all going to to it with their husbands but the petty insults are absurd.

Ann Romney made a fine speech and held her own and I think though that Michelle hit a chord with some people that made hers a bit better.

At the end of the day, neither lady is going to make policy so there is no need for all this back and forth

Ann Romney's speech was completely forgettable. Michelle's speech was illustrative about her husband, while Ann's was merely filled with adjectives, not examples. I am really surprised Ann'e speechwriters did not do a better job for her. It is really Speech 101. The only thing I remember from Ann's speech was when she shouted " I love women!", which was cheesy.
I thought Romney had some good lines, but the "I love you women!" line was forced and awkward and uncomfortable.

In spite of that, I think Michelle hit it out of the ball park with her speech last night. It did what it needed to do, it humanized the president, which is hard to do for any president after 4 years of policy fights. It emphasized that he was the everyman who lived the American dream and became president.

But, I still know Michelle Obama has in her the "first time I have ever felt proud of my country" spirit. I know that the campaign outside of the convention is highly negative on both sides and that all politicians lie. Michelle gave a good speech, but she is not nor will she be president in the next few years. She might make a fine president, but this is about Barack and the Democrats and Romney and the Republicans.

Plain and simple: "It's the Economy, Stupid."

For you, perhaps, but as a woman of child bearing age, the Republicans' obsession with my and every other woman's reproductive capacity is disturbing. Romney wants to cut all funding to Planned Parenthood. I don't know you, obviously, but the anti-choice people in my life are frequently the ones who think sex education teaches kids how to be sluts, believe birth control is a sin, complain about the ungodliness of abortion, and then bitch and moan that there are a certain kind of people who "keep having kids." And if you haven't met these all-star thinkers, I am very glad for you. The threat to reproductive freedom, even birth control! is at stake.

And if Obama trends left, good! He's been a moderate Republican these past four years.

PP here. I am outrageously pro-choice, having protested my fair share over the years and had personal experience with choices. I have two daughters. I am not forgetting about the Republican war on women, but that war is irrelevant to my choice for president. That is a fight at the state level. You may or may not notice that the fact that there is a Democrat in the White House has not prevented at least two states from regulating abortion into non-existence (Texas and Kansas, with Virginia doing it's level best). The fight for choice is influenced by the White House, but is not won there. Letting someone else have a chance to fix the economy, when Obama has proven himself incapable and lacking backbone does not change my stance on choice. I am realistic and abortion is still legal and only a Supreme Court decision is going to change that (or a Constitutional Amendment). Just tell Justice Ginsburg to hold on a few more years.....

And don't fool yourself, Obama is a socialist who believes we should all be middle class.
Actually I thought your post was very interesting until the last line. That's hilarious! Do you even know any socialists? We don't count Obama as one of us. He is quite centrist. That's what's so weird about this situation. Obama and Bill Clinton are both serious centrists but Obama, the guy who bailed out the banks, is seen as a socialist. Cah-razy! It's hard to attribute this misperception to anything other than fear of a guy with an exotic last name because he ain't very different from Bill Clinton.

It's a good thing Abe Lincoln didn't have to rely on being well-received in an age of mass media. He was a stiff as they got. But he got the job done. No surface finesse necessary; just the mindset to do a damned good job.

He had conviction and integrity. People will sacrifice a lot for that. Unfortunately, Romney has no core. So all that's left is what is on the surface. If that isn't top notch, there is nothing left.

Name one socialist thing Obama has done. Furthermore, explain what socialism has to do with a universal middle class.

I don't think you know what socialism is.

He hasn't done a single socialist thing since taking office.

He came close with the auto bailout, I guess, but government's out of that now.

It was Bush who nationalized the banks and AIG and Fannie/Freddie. He was the socialist, ironically enough.

Anyone who calls Barack Obama is a racist.

What? You're not a racist? Then, he's not a socialist.

You really expect an answer? Here is the answer you will get: Yes he is and he was born in Kenya. The world is 4,000 years old and my mother likes that I live in the basement.

PP, why are you throwing around the term "socialist" when you have made it clear that you don't know what it means? Did you hear someone else say this, or hear it on TV? You can Wikipedia it for more info, before you embarrass yourself in a social setting.

I thought she delivered a wonderful speech and did an excellent job! She looked beautiful as well!

Probably after Romney wins and we no longer have to worry about having a socialist president. But not until then.

Anyone who thinks that Obama is a socialist either doesn't know anything about Obama or doesn't know anything about socialism. Though, I guess the possibility that both are true also exists.

Americans are so paranoid about the idea that they do not bother to find out what it means. There is not a single US politician who can be called a socialist, unfortunately. I would like to see some Northern European country style social democratic policies here.

Oh I wasn't gauging them based on that, sadly. But I really liked her line about having a "real marriage" instead of a storybook marriage. And her line about how you may not agree with my husband politically but he will fight for you everyday. I was thinking more about what sounded authentic and emotionally appealing, which is how I evaluate these kind of speeches. No way I'm voting for her husband but I try to listen with an open mind to the speeches and I'm always interested in whether the speaker is effective at "grabbing" the listener, regardless of their politics.

Bernie Sanders is a democratic socialist..... Wish we had more politicians like him!
