International trip for 5th graders?

I think GT programs are great and wish DC had them.

I also think this planning this expensive trip during the school year is typical Yu Ying. It's thoughtlessness followed up by a big dose of nastiness.

Nice try though with the whole "PC" argument. Very 90s.

I really don't understand how you can say that "thoughtlessness followed by a big dose of nastiness" is "typical" Yu Ying. It's just not true.

Chinese immersion school ~ school trip to China (is this surprising? You don't think it should be offered b/c it's "nasty" and hurts people's feelings) It's always been expensive to go, it's on the other side of the world, and has been planned before the school was founded.

Maybe you should include the trip requirement as part of an enrollment contract? It would be a great way to further weed out all those families that don't have an extra 3000 dollars around for a 10 year olds field trip.

it is the 2 weeks out of the school year while school is in session that bugs me the most about this trip. Summer, even spring break plus a week of school, would feel very different. The students who don't go, for whatever reason, finances or parent comfort level, will be sitting around without their classmates and teachers.

How many students are there in this year's fifth grade?

Doubtful there would be complaints if the parents had any connection or interest in China in the first place rather than sending their kid to a Chinese immersion school only because of their luck in the lottery and no other equal or better alternatives.

Is your understanding that only family of financial means should afford their child(rne) with the gift of an immersion education. Look, I support the trip and when the time comes, my family has the financial resources to send our child, plus one parent. But everyone does not have the finances, and I understand those parents concern. I personally think the gala auction money should be used from this year forth to help fund the China trip. If so, I think more parents would be more supportive of the auction.

BTW--YY was not our first or second choice. However, we have come to embrace the language and support our child's second language. We do not have a connection to China and yes we did get lucky in the lottery. But bitch, so did you.

DC reports at least 4 5th grade students left. That reduces the class to what, 25 students?

And they all went to Basis except for one!

Exactly. Too bad the charter board can't give priority to people who are interested in Mandarin. They won't be the ones bitching about a Chinese immersion school having a trip to China as part of their curriculum.

" Too bad the charter board can't give priority to people who are interested in Mandarin."

What you mean is too bad you can't make this a fully private school funded by tax dollars.

Instead you're stuck with a quasi-private program that does it's best to drive out low-income students AND uses tax dollars. Boo-hoo.

Wow. My son just reported to me that his language teacher said that she wants to take her top students on a trip. I will not say what language or school.

I don't know where I come down on this since I know he would be extremely delighted to go and we could probably find the money. I am willing to bet, however, that some of his classmates are not in that position. Like some, I hope it's offered in the summer and not during the school year.

Stokes parents, how did your six graders do on their trips?

And it's Yu Ying's fault that they couldn't handle the challenges. Of course.

I don't care where he money comes from -- they are too young for this trip.

Why? Is that written somewhere in stone? Or is it more likely your personal opinion and general cultural expectation? What if the trip is a good way of keeping them engaged in their studies through the volatile middle school years?

Why do you think you speak for everyone?

They went to Basis because they couldn't handle the challenges of Yu Ying? LMAO
