Cashier forgot to ring up an item and just put it in my bag - what would you have done?

This has happened to me a couple of times at TJ Maxx/Marshall's. I've only noticed because I went to return the item and it wasn't on the receipt that I knew it should be on. Both times I said "well it should be on that receipt" but they went ahead and gave me a gift card for a return without a receipt.

Going forward having read this thread, I'm not taking it back if it means the cashier gets fired.

If I notice at the time, I say something.
If I notice afterward, I say nothing.

Didn't we collectively tell another poster not to return something that was mailed to them accidentally. I don't see this as very different.

OP didn't steal it. I certainly wound't make an extra trip for it.
