The good doctor appears to need anger management. And, a little better information about epidurals and childbirth. Thankfully, I think the doctor bit is a bunch of bullshit.

I am another doctor and concur with the doctor. Although he is a little bit angry, anyone who has the education and knowledge would be too. The natural birth proponents favor distortion of facts to create a fantasy world of idiotic ideas that run in contrary to valid practices and studies.

Natural childbirth and homebirth advocates fabricate claims and then insist that their fabricated claims are "facts." In that way they can ensure that their "facts" always comport with their beliefs, and in that way, they don't have to waste any time actually learning anything about childbirth.

There's one teensy, weensy little problem, though. Their "facts" are not facts at all. They are often stupid and deadly errors.

There are so many stupid and deadly "facts" that it is difficult to choose the one that is most stupid and most deadly, but I nominate the following bit of idiocy taken from Mothering.com:

There is such a person as "Dr." Amy, but she allows her persona to be used by the medical establishment to spread disinformation. Like when Jesus asked the possessed man who was possessing him, and a voice answered "Legion.". As Henci Goer said, "Don't feed the dragon.". On "her" blog, The Skeptical OB, "she" answers almost every critical comment instantly and simultaneously with other comments on other posts. There is no point in engaging "her."

You agree that not getting an epidural is more risky than getting one? Either of you should feel free to back that up with actual science. Until then, I'm calling bullshit.

There's a vast continuum with regard to "natural" birth. It seems like the critical MDs are equating a non-epidural hospital birth with squatting alone in a cornfield. In doing so, you're missing an opportunity to actually educate, as opposed to bashing straw women.

I've personally pointed that out to Dr Amy and it did nothing to improve her attitude or insulting. Some of the anti-natural birth folks are as obnoxious and misguided as the ultra-militant natural birth folks. There is no gray area for them, it seems. Good luck getting through to them. They can't see past their own agenda.

This article on the 6 myths about epidurals is pretty interesting. It seems like there's quite a bit of disagreement between the two sides on some of these issues. A lot of the information in the article directly contradicts what I was told in my childbirth class, which is just frustrating and confusing for those of us who are trying to make informed decisions about how to proceed with our own births.

I don't understand why a doctor would say an epidural is healthier than a no-pain-meds labor. I thought the benefit of the epidural was mainly comfort rather than better health. I have heard of labors where the baby is in a bad position and the epidural allows the mom to rest and the baby to turn, so that would be a health benefit I guess. But that's for a specific issue, not overall.

The article posted at 12:12 says there's an increased risk of PPD in women who deliver without pain medication but I don't know if that's what the PP MDs were referring to.
