Why do people in DC/MD look down on Virginians?

Anonymous
Why do people care how nice an area is when it comes to deciding where to live? Why isn't proximity to jobs and good schools much more important?

obviously there wasn't a day honoring slavery, don't be stupid. but again, you are intolerant, so stay away.

Your reasoning skills suggest you are all of about , so I'll assume you weren't old enough to even know about "Lee-Jackson-King" Day, now defunct

You are unlikely to grasp the message that is intentionally sent when your elected officials in Richmond outright reject the soft federal mandate to honor Dr. King with a federal holiday and instead decide to lump him in with two Confederate war generals and honor all 3 together. I have a sense you might be the type of person who believes the Civil War was not actually about slavery (c'mon, amiright?) so therefore it's super cool for a state to have a state holiday in the 20th century to honor the feats of its generals.

If you do believe that about the war, then you're actually making my point about the lingering problems in Virginia.

NP here. Lee-Jackson day isn't defunct. The DMV was closed this year because of lee-Jackson day. Just sayin'.

I've read most, but not all, of this thread. I live in DC, closer to NoVa, then SoMa. There are many NoVa hoods I like in Arlington and Alexandria. Ditto for close in SoMa. Not a fan of either VA's Route 7 or MD's Rockville Pike. If we were to move, however, it would be to SoMa. While I think local NoVa politics and pols are very good, I am less enamored of the unpredictability of state-level politics, for example, the VA AG and his overreach in so many areas (limited government for everybody save the folks whom the AG hates, such as gays and those who believe in climate crisis).

Lee–Jackson Day is currently observed on the Friday before Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, which is the third Monday in January. State offices are closed for both holidays

I grew up in MD but moved to VA mainly because I liked the education options much more (including the public universities) and the lower taxes. Plus I think MD is getting more dangerous.

And I'll bet that 99% of all Northern Virginians find such a holiday ridiculous and offensive, so enough, you've made your point. I think the real title of this thread should be "Why do people in DC and rich parts of MoCo look down on Virginia and other areas perceived to be less cool and wonderful" since you see just as much derision of Wheaton, Silver Spring and even Howard County as you do sometimes of Arlington and Fairfax counties.

I'm perfectly fine with celebrating Lee and Jackson.

Who makes fun of Howard County? Definitely much nicer than MoCo or PG.

I grew up in MD and love VA much better. Plus...we have WEGMANS!!

I don't look down or up at any other area...

We have WEGMANS in *gasp* PG county. You need a better argument.

I'm sorry but if your quibbling over the extra $166 a month or so that makes up for extra taxes in VA vs MD/DC then you should stay in VA because you can't afford to live here.

Taxes in VA aren't great either. You may not have to pay county and state but you have to pay taxes on things you already own. We lived in VA for a couple of months when DH was outprocessing from the military. We had to register our car there because we had just returned from Europe and we needed US tags. We got a $200 tax bill on the car that had VA plates on it for just 2 months. It was a Hyundai, nothing fancy.

We've been Virginia personal property tax slouches for years. We have both cars registered in MD where we're from and have not changed the registrations since college. And we both went to college in Virginia and I lived there for 3 years after college, never changed registration. Then moved to the district and didn't change. Then moved to Arlington for a year. We just bought in MD and are moving in July. Arlington County finally sent a letter saying "you paid taxes in 2010 in our state but you don't have a car registered. do you own one? If so you need to pay pers. prop. tax" Since we're moving in 2 weeks, they can't really do anything to us. And I feel like a badass for being able to avoid that tax for 4 full years for 2 cars.

if you make $400K, the tax savings in Virginia are much more than a few hundred a month. Give me a break.

Close. You're a tax cheat, so you're just a plain old ass.

So basically you're bragging about 4 years worth of tax evasion??

Not MoCo. There was just an article on crime in MoCo in Bethesda Magazine this month and there is remarkably little.
