I think that people are worried about their children being BITTEN more than licked. At least I am. A policeman told me that there are hundreds of children bitten by dogs in our area each year, and my friend's child in NW DC nearly lost his eye after being bitten by a neighbor's dog. (This was very recent.) So, to many moms, this issue IS important - it's a safety issue. And if people just kept their dogs on leashes on NW sidewalks and in parks (next to playgrounds), then moms like the moms on this thread wouldn't have to be worried anymore. Most dog owners here have said they do the right things with their dogs. I really think that the irresponsible people are in the minority. But it only takes one bite in the face to ruin a child's life. |

I do. I don't care for dogs and would prefer your dog's tongue not make contact with my toddler's face. If it does, I will promptly vomit on you as you lecture me on the world's "bigger issues."
You sound like a class act! Your neighbors must love you. Seriously, how old are you - 12? |

Bad neighbors can also be controlling uptight moms who think their toddlers do no wrong...I'll take a dog lick over someone like you any day. |
| Facial bites are soooo deforming. That can give a child a complex for life. |
| I don't think that anyone would disagree that biting in the face is really, really bad, but that is so rare. Dog licking is a lot more common and is not at all the the same as a dog bite. Dog licking is gross, but the dog's tongue will only reach so far. If my dog is at my side and you stay a few feet away, believe me, he can neither lick, nor bite you. |

I agree with you pp, but the dogs face should never get that close to a child's face.
BTW, I am in the medical field, and I have seen a good share of facial bites. |
| I agree with you, but if you are standing still with your dog at your side and a child approaches (without you seeing them)... dog licks! Mom freaks out! Not sure I am to blame! I try to watch carefully, but I am surprised at how often people (young and old) approach my dog without asking me. He is very friendly, but is a licker. This ONLY happens when people put their faces in his face (which I think is weird). |
| I say kick the sh*t out of a dog that gets too close to your kid. I would. |
What a sweetheart. This whole conversation has gotten out of control. I hardly think there is an epidemic of dogs mauling toddlers throughout D.C. Surely seven pages of hateful discussion is enough, and surely physical threats, even against dogs, are uncalled for? |

Since we're talking about facial wounds, here's a story of a toddler who was bitten by the family's pit bull. An example of really good parenting. Warning: the picture of the kid's wound is somewhat graphic. I know this wasn't a stranger's dog but it's unsettling nonetheless.

That is terrible. I figure the dog probably went after the cookie, that was in by the kids mouth. Just a reminder to those who become complacent, and leave young children in a room, alone, with a dog. |
Goes to show whether it's a stranger's dog or your own dog, an animal can turn on you without provocation. I don't care how gentle your dog is, I don't want it anywhere near my child's face and would appreciate if you can keep your "gentle" dog at a safe distance. Thanks. |
| Agree fully with the PP - no matter how safe you think your dog is, there are no guarantees. I was bitten in the face in junior high school by my widowed aunt's elderly schnauzer. Despite the fact it only (reportedly) had 6 teeth, I ended up with a mouth full of stitches and a nasty scar. I'm trying not to pass my dog phobia to my son - he loves them and we let him pet the neighbors' dogs under closely supervised circumstances - but I'll also never let a dog near his face, and I think any parents who are sure that their wonderful pets are harmless are risking a terrible accident. |
Ha! I agree! IMHO.. Dogs are pretty disgusting creatures. They eat trash, lick butts, and smell. To each his/her own, if they choose a dog as a pet...BUT, please do not feel your dog is loved by all(or that they are "entitled" to roam like people)!!
If they get too close to my kids and the owner does nothing to prevent this (despite my 4 year old DD being afraid of them), they will definitely make friends with my Nike's...Whack...HOWWLLL!! ...I do love pets, but this dog thing drives me nuts... |
