As she f—king should. |
That's EXACTLY why this whole college admissions process is a total scam. Everyone does the most idealistic and curated extracurriculars to get into the top schools only to end up working in consulting or finance. Then again, you have to remember that your kid's application is most likely going to be read by some 30 year old with a humanities degree making $45K a year, and you need to appeal to them as well. |
They were attempting to say that but then immediately contradicted themselves. |
I don't know about "passion" per se .. seriously, how many 15 and 16 year olds do you know who are genuinely passionate about topics like the effects of playing jazz music to shrimp or why cows align themselves with the earth's magnetic field while grazing -and yes, these are actual published studies ... but you get the point. All high schoolers are playing the game. Most fake passion this stuff just to get their foot in the door, and eventually end up in consulting or finance. |
+1 I wish there were a way for the consequences of the Trump administrations to fall squarely - and solely - on those who voted for him. Natural consequences and an efficient culling of the herd, to the benefit of the rest of us. |
| Kids that have their lives curated for test maxxing and aoplication maxxing get ECs and courses chosen to college max. They are hard pressed to know what they actually are interested in besides status and checking the right boxes. And anyone wonders where the passion went? These kids are acculturated to see college as a trade school route to an income . |
| Nothing matters when everyone is told you are disposable in front of AI on daily basis. |
Oh please. Young people usually start off more idealistic and over time there's mortgages, kids, "real life" and you need to pay the bills. Think of the college grads that move to NYC and live in a walkup with a bunch of roommates when they're starting out. |
Thanks for the chuckle! |
| Spouse works at the World Bank and it remains as hard as ever to get a job there, especially at junior levels… |
Realistic! The world is far too expensive now to “follow your dreams.” It is such an astoundingly privileged notion that a person should pursue whatever it is they want to do and expect to become successful in this vocation. |
No one is inured from the impact of the crazy political atmosphere. I work in a job that is most assuredly “just a job” to me (project manager for a healthcare organization) and hospitals are very much caught in the crosshairs of these political headwinds. |
Truly “changing the system” would involve dismantling the Epstein class. Tell me how a lone twenty-something goes about doing that? |
Apparently I didn’t explain myself well. Yes, that’s what I meant. Yes, the job is just that. They want high paying careers to provide money, to be able to fund things they do love to do, which will not be work related. They want lives that are more balanced than what we have. Of course, they are young. All of us would love high paying jobs that give us free time to do the things we want to do. |
Same for me! I think teaching is one of the few jobs I’d try to talk him out of. Luckily he’s not at all interested. He’d like me to leave! |
