Yeah, six pages and no mention of the Duke douchiness. My oldest kid just got back from semester abroad and commented how all the kids got along well except the Duke kids who everyone hated.

And Harvard has no d-bags? Really?

Oh please, you aren’t aware of this reputation? Talk to alumni of any other North Carolina school, public or private, and they’ll fill you in.

People who love and want to go to Duke don’t think like you do. They don’t think the end all and be all of their college experience is the name brand of Harvard. They are looking and thinking about what they want their four years of college to be. Most of the boys want to meet hot chicks, most college kids want to go to crazy parties, they want to lounge around outside on the quad and play frisbee. They aren’t thinking about how the classics professor as Harvard is the best classics professor in the world and it will be life changing to learn from her.

They got into Duke. Their life will be just fine. They have a huge network of rich smart people. They have access to the same fancy finance bro jobs or law schools or med schools. It’s not like Johns Hopkins med school doesn’t take kids from both Duke and Harvard. Jesus. You’re acting like it’s squandering something to choose Duke over Harvard and that’s just dumb. No one ten years into their career is going to say: I picked the Harvard candidate over the Duke candidate because one was Harvard. No. They will say; these guys are smart obviously and which one do I like better and who has the more relevant skills. And a lot of times it’s the one who went to parties in college and met hot chicks.

I’ve seen this said repeated on this board, but I don’t think it’s correct. I went to another T10 but not an Ivy. Harvard, like many schools, favors its undergrads in grad school admissions. Further, most T10 grad schools also favor Harvard undergrads. Harvard and Yale seem to do a particularly good job at grad school placement when compared to other top schools.

Eyeroll. How would any other other North Carolina schools, public or private, know one way or the other about this? It’s not like the Wake kids are hanging out on East Campus. This is so dumb. Yes Carolina people hate Duke. We call it a rivalry. I’m not saying Duke doesn’t have douchebags. It’s just an equivalent douchebag number to Harvard. Same douches.

There were 52,000 people at the game last fall. This year, it’s at Fenway.

How would they know? Based on the way Duke kids act at sporting events, they are universally reviled at other Carolina schools.

Just throwing out there that it carried over to study abroad.

.

So your analysis is to choose Harvard because you think it’ll give you a slightly better post grad options from Duke.

75 degrees in the quad, basketball games, generally accepted more “fun” vs a slightly better chance I can get into a slightly better med school four years from now. I mean, you acknowledge Duke sends kids to med school, so it isn’t like the kid can’t go to medical school. He just has to accept a slightly lower chance of going o Harvard med school four years from now Vs the trade offs of the actual four years.

Haters gonna hate. It’s part of what makes Duke alumnae so loyal. And why there are ten pages on why it’s better than Harvard for an undergrad experience.

Duke isn’t remotely like this anymore. Kids have to be bused offsite to attend frat parties and there isn’t much else going on.

Reading comprehension apparently poor for Duke alums.

Another book smart, life dumb Harvard person. I didn't say Duke doesn't have d-bags. It definitely does. Just saying that it is hilarious that Harvard people are acting like it is only a Duke thing. Harvard has more than its fair share. And Harvard has a lot more kids who have spent their lives being told their poop doesn't stink because they are perfect. Duke also has its share of these, but not nearly as many.

Actually I think it gives significantly better career and grad school options. I’m not a Harvard alum but spouse is. Outcomes are truly extraordinary, take a look at a red book for any class. And I say this as an alum of another T10 college.

I personally think the offsite parties are kind of dumb but that isn't a sign of Duke having a bad social life. These parties look much more fun than anything at Harvard, and are inclusive of a lot more kids than the rare Harvard party. Duke isn't socially where it was when frats were on campus (and when it was less nerdy than it is now), but it is still far more social than Harvard.

What first hand knowledge do you have of Harvard? Or Duke today? Seems like you are spinning your experience three decades ago at Duke.

Funnily enough I was at brunch earlier and a group of Duke alumni, all wearing merch, were doing some sort of reunion next to us. They were very loud and rowdy and clearly pissed the waiters off.
