Duke vs. Harvard

Duke’s grad schools are good but not one of them is better than Harvard’s.

Raleigh-Durham, home of office parks, or Boston, one of the most picturesque and historically significant cities in the U.S. and the best college town.

Even Chapel Hill is a million times better than Durham

Harvard has nothing like Duke Gardens. And they are right on campus. Just saying...

No one chooses Duke over Harvard. Just stop. The prior post is accurate. Only 250 students a year get admitted to Harvard and decide elsewhere. Of those 250, the vast majority go to other Ivies, MIT, Stanford, Caltech, Oxford or Cambridge.

Harvard has the highest yield rate in the country without having ED.

This has to be a troll.

Biomedical engineering. Duke is world-renowned. Harvard doesn't really have this. And I'm not sure if Harvard has an equivalent to Duke's grad environmental science program.

Otherwise I probably agree.

Perhaps not better, but in my field in medicine, they're roughly on par with one another.

Mentioned this just to make it more clear that Duke has lots of opportunities across the board, in addition to the undergrad context

Not only does Harvard have it but it’s also well ranked.

Duke has a very good medical school but there isn’t much dispute than Harvard and Hopkins have the best medical schools.

I would have thought the same thing before faced with this choice but when your kid is feeling like they might not fit in or enjoy life at one of the options yet knows they shouldn't turn it down, it's a real issue. Thank you to those who've given helpful answers.

If your kid got into Harvard, likely they belong there. You realize what an opportunity this is right? Please dont squander it. i cant see how anyone who could get into Harvard would be happier or more fulfilled at duke

Yeah, six pages and no mention of the Duke douchiness. My oldest kid just got back from semester abroad and commented how all the kids got along well except the Duke kids who everyone hated.

And Harvard has no d-bags? Really?

Not arguing here - I'm sure if you look at US News or whoever is ranking these days, those will probably be #1 and 2. But functionally, they will all get you where you want to be and outcomes are pretty much the same in med.

Other than basketball, Duke’s sports don’t generate much student attention.

People who love and want to go to Duke don’t think like you do. They don’t think the end all and be all of their college experience is the name brand of Harvard. They are looking and thinking about what they want their four years of college to be. Most of the boys want to meet hot chicks, most college kids want to go to crazy parties, they want to lounge around outside on the quad and play frisbee. They aren’t thinking about how the classics professor as Harvard is the best classics professor in the world and it will be life changing to learn from her.

They got into Duke. Their life will be just fine. They have a huge network of rich smart people. They have access to the same fancy finance bro jobs or law schools or med schools. It’s not like Johns Hopkins med school doesn’t take kids from both Duke and Harvard. Jesus. You’re acting like it’s squandering something to choose Duke over Harvard and that’s just dumb. No one ten years into their career is going to say: I picked the Harvard candidate over the Duke candidate because one was Harvard. No. They will say; these guys are smart obviously and which one do I like better and who has the more relevant skills. And a lot of times it’s the one who went to parties in college and met hot chicks.
