If a student is absent, they shouldn’t be getting a 0 for anything. That’s ridiculous. |
If teachers banded together things would change but I know there are always those who won't....why because they are looking to please the people that treat them horribly on a daily basis. It's a weird dynamic in teaching. My niece wants to be a teacher-I strongly encouraged her staying up north after college. Do not teach here. |
Parents care about their kids who are the ones that schools are failing. It will get worse because parents want their kids time at school to be meaningful and it's not these days. I wish parents and teachers could come together but we won't. |
Not all absences are excused. I had a student the other week who came up to me and said “I was on vacation last week. What did I miss?” Lol. He didn’t miss any tests and I did let him make up work, so he was fine, but I was a bit annoyed. |
I meant excused absences. It’s stupid to put a 0 in there for a test that the kid wasn’t there to take. |
We put the zero in there as a reminder that the assessment needs to be taken or will turn into a real zero at the end of the quarter, otherwise most students will happily forget about it. Would you rather we sprang the zero on the them in the report card? |
+1, it’s better to add the zero priory to the end of the quarter. Many, many kids won’t do anything until that zero appears. |
Exactly. I used to leave the grade blank. I’d email reminder after reminder that the work has to be completed. My emails would be ignored. I’d talk to the student before class or after class; I’d get a “it’ll be done soon.” And, after weeks of MY attempts to get the work completed, I’d put in the zero because the marking period would come to the end. Sure enough, I got emails from the parents about why the quarter grade dropped dramatically. So, in my view, the zero is a KINDNESS. It tells the student and parent what happens if the work isn’t submitted. Without it, the student and parent gets a false sense of how the student is doing in class. |
| Grade book is now down and so my student still hasn’t seen any math grades since 12/17. |
No it’s not. I checked shortly after your post. |
Just checked again. Gradebook is still up. What are you smoking?! |
yup |
I get this. I love teaching but the teaching part seems to not be the focus-I feel like I'm failing kids with the way this county is run. I'm tired. I'm also a parent and see the system failing my own kids. |
I feel this deeply. It’s hard when you can see behind the curtains, isn’t it? You know there are so many good teachers fighting against a broken system. And to watch them quit one by one… |
