If that’s the worst thing happening in her and your life right now, you are blessed, indeed.

Touché. And if having a too much to grade is the worst thing in your life, consider yourself blessed.

Why are you trying to start a parent/ teacher conflict? Find a better way.

I think feds get a teacher's point of view about this because we are also used to working in a thankless job. It's a thankless job with some real pros, so I do try to keep my complaining to fed adjacent people who understand. Walk a mile in someone else's shoes and you learn a whole lot. At the end of the day, it's those in charge of the money that can improve the situation. One last thing, there is a reason that "no good deed goes unpunished" is an old adage. We're all whiners about something.

I wish that were the worst thing in our lives, but thanks for the sympathy?

I simply stated it wasn’t fair for my child to not get back their grades in a timely manner. Someone (presumably a teacher) responded with if that’s the worst thing in your life, consider yourself blessed. I responded in kind.

See how that works?

You literally accused me of starting a conflict when I did nothing of the sort. The teacher started the conflict. lol.

Can the teacher be a better person and not respond to my simple statement about grades without retaliation?

Yes, he could be. But he isn’t. I guess you’re equal.

I don ‘t like the back and forth spats on these forums. They can become so mean and petty.

But the person responding isn’t the AP teacher you’re having a problem with. Take it to that teacher. There are many teachers on this forum and we are doing the best we can in an impossible situation. When you criticize our profession, we tend to get defensive because we work hard and we care. We have to be the better person all the time because both admin and students love to pin us as the problem.

So yes, a teacher took too long getting a grade back to your child. Yes, that’s a problem and that’s unfair. But we also see the reason why: that teacher has to grade at home so they may have other circumstances (family, health) that have to come first. Not an excuse. Just reality.

I made one post and didn’t criticize the progression whatsoever. All I said was it isn’t fair for my child to not get feedback in a timely manner. 3 months is ridiculous.

A simple response of “you’re right, it’s not,” would be appropriate. Instead I got, “if that’s the only thing bad in your life you are blessed.” I don’t see teachers trying to understand the parents’ view at all. And for what it’s worth, I was an FCPS teacher so I know what’s possible. And 3 months to get something back graded for anyone isn’t ok. Period. That’s a fact and that’s not “criticizing the profession.”

Plenty of posters on this thread have said that isn’t okay. I even wrote that within the last page or so. Perhaps it wasn’t directed at you, but teacher acknowledgement is here. No, it’s not okay. We agree.

But we get triggered by the angry and mean responses, too. So, like you, we get defensive. This site paints “teachers” and “parents” in monoliths, so we take things personally when they don’t even apply to us. But that’s natural when something you care about is attacked.

So let’s allow grace to go both ways.

Teacher here. If parents want change to happen then they should be advocating for teachers to have less PD and more time to grade. For example- last week, I wasted 3 hours in useless PD whennI should gave been grading.

If parents start speaking up at SB meetings that will help tremendously.

Are people really trying to defend a teacher taking 3 months to give feedback on an assignment? Come on. That is ridiculous. If you care about student learning you will find a way to get that done before 3 months go by. And if you have a serious health or family issue going on that is preventing you from doing your job to that extent, then you need to take leave. A month is one thing, but three? Take some pride in your job.

Of COURSE it isn’t okay.

But you’re also talking to teachers who do take pride in our jobs and get grades done promptly. Lecturing us doesn’t fix the problem. It just puts us on the defensive because of the vitriol thrown at our profession.
