It's such a sign of weakness to feel the need to do this. He's increasingly vulnerable on this so he wants to get in front of the nation to lie about it. The thing is you can't really lie about the economy. Prices are going up, energy is going up, jobs keep getting cut and are hard to find...and families are feeling all that heading into the holidays. This will backfire on him.

This is a big tell since this presumably doesn't appeal to large parts of his base. I.e., the government wants you to get high and forget your pain. Very dystopian.
