Sorority Rush: THIS ISN’T DUBAI; IT’S TUSCALOOSA Whose daddy is paying for all this?

It’s great to see how up and coming all the southern state schools are. It is a breath a fresh air compared to the stale campus culture in NOVA.

Don’t make women have to choose. Don’t make assumptions. Don’t pigeon hole them.

Agreed. True feminism is supporting women in all of their choices. I loved my sorority years. I still remember what I wore for rush every single day. My parents were pretty wealthy but I purchased it all myself from my summer internship money.

I think there's a difference between "no judgment if a college woman wants to join a sorority" and "it seems insane to plan around going to a specific college, getting into a specific sorority, and having your parents spend a quarter mill on clothes, makeup, and other costs associated with your social life so that you can meet someone from the right social strata and be set up for a wealthy life."

its not really that insane- people have been doing it for a very long time. Haven't you read a Jane Austen novel???

Not the same. Women now, and for many decades, have been successful on their own. Not so much during Regency England, where women depended on men for their survival.

Forgot to add that my own DD is also in a sorority, just not in one of those over the top Southern ones.

So you are donating 10% of your gross income a year to charity and have a plan to leave your wealth to charity when you die? No? Then quit telling others what to do with their money. Sororities are a valid choice made by women who want friendship, connections, and, yes, to serve their community.

Why don’t any of the analyses of wealth distribution actually prove this out? Are they keeping all their riches under the mattress?

actually not. Since if journalists can’t get paid they can’t produce information and our democracy suffers. Better to request a gift link, use Apple News, or actually subscribe. If you’re seeing a paywall it means you already read enough Atlantic articles this month that you are getting something out of it and they need to monetize somehow.

I went to a private high school in Alabama and I know there’s a lot of money there. But also, the moms and girls wear the same clothes. And they all share clothes with their moms and their aunts and their cousins.

Social media is ruining everything it touches.

I’m Phi Mu and even in the early 90’s we talked about Rush in Alabama, Mississippi, and Louisiana. Even then it was over the top compared to everywhere else. It’s to be expected it’s only gotten crazier.

But people shouldn’t put sorority girls down, typically their qca’s are higher than average and it’s a powerful networking tool.

Can we give this thread a rest already? Who cares. Most of us actually care more about education than sororities, especially those in Alabama. Most of us don't even send our kids there nor do our kids want to go there.

This is the most valuable information I’ve gotten from the internet in a very long time (the most valuable ever from DCUM). Thanks PP.

Agreed, but why do they have to be so over the top with expensive outfits and perfect looks? If they were really about friendship and community service, why the obvious emphasis on wealth?

They aren’t. Tik tok is showing you a tiny slice of sororities. Even in the South.

Same with jewelry, which contributes a big part of the high OOTD numbers.
