How much do you give your freshmen DD in allowance per month?

Hair and nails? Goodness.

Yup. We got summer jobs for spending money.

$1,500 is more monthly play money than I get as an adult. I can’t imagine giving a teen that much.

Thats what I was thinking!

We originally told freshman DS he had to spend his own money but he complained about the food so much the first two weeks we put $500 in the flex account (he can use swipes at a lot of campus places but the meal plan does not include sushi and he can only use 3x swipes a day, so if he wants to go to the late-night place for a snack it comes out of flex dollars if he went to the dining hall three times already.) We also said he can use the credit card to go out to eat 1x a month. The idea of giving a kid money for regular manicures, $50 food deliveries, or lots of party outfits just seems crazy to me. "Food delivery" to us in college was three people splitting a pizza and everyone just shared bottles of nail polish and prom dresses.

$80 per month in NYC for incidentals. She had a summer job and has been working some during school. She has a small meal plan, so she does charge groceries to my credit card and stuff like that -- recently she went thrift shopping and charged a pair of jeans to my card. Recently bought a new bra on Amazon, and I'm also fine with that. As long as she doesn't go crazy, I let her use her judgment. She uses her own money for broadway/off broadway shows, dining out, and whatever else.

It’s no wonder this place has been invaded by trolls. You people are very gullible. 🤣

meal plan), transportation, and her extras like clothing, hair & nails, entertainment, etc. We fund everything else. So far, since August she’s spent all of it each month and doesn’t have anymore left by the end of the month. Our older kids, all boys, got the same amount of money, but there was always a lot left over every month. To me, $1500 is more than enough so, I believe she’s overspending. How much is your DD getting per month?

Well, you are definitely spoiling all of your kids. Also $1500/month in the past went further than $1500/month does now. Also you didn't indicate where your sons went to school, it could have been a lower cost of living area.

But really, the bolded is more expensive for a girl than for a boy. You're paying for her makeup and skincare, they probably had a bar of Irish Spring and spent the rest on beer.

seriously? poor kid. how does he afford to go out and have fun with friends? I would say at least 100 per week.

My DD gets $200 a month too. We pay for textbooks, flights home at Thanksgiving and Christmas, and a full meal plan. The $200 a month pays for everything else. We'll give her a ski pass for her birthday next month.

you realize kids go out in college on the weekends for dinner maybe drinks etc...? that is barely covering 3-4 days a month. if you can afford it I would reconsider.

Ended up being about $1000 per month in an expensive city. Guess what? She’s now well-employed, happy and has asked for $0 since she moved into her first apartment. So we didn’t ruin her!

What I find amazing is and I paid all three of my kids schools when I went to college I lived at home, paid my own college as a commute and my Mom charged me rent and I had to get my own car. I was no on her insurance.

My wifes parents did the same, but just did not charge rent. My wife actually had a full time 40 hour a week job and did school full time and graduated on time. Her parents used to all the time talk about how they helped her during college by letting her "live for free at home"

Funny part listening to kids today whine about job hunting. I actually was a full time employee at MasterCard during college. When college ended I just went to work as usual howefer, after a few months I got a better job. My wife same thing.

By graduation I was only making $25 less a week than my Mom did in her job. Kinda made her mad. So maybe that is why I paid my way.

Kids can do it today except I would not force kids to do it.

(DP) We give our DD a similar amount, and she does all of that; she just pays for it using an on-campus job and internship savings.

My kid is in Chicago and doesn’t spend anything like that! Sometimes they’ll go out for cookies or something. Once or twice a year she’ll go to a concert but spend her summer job money for that.

College kids get cheap beer and snacks. Maybe a pizza. Only 50 yr olds go out for dinner and drinks.
