Mine gets about $150/month outside of LA for things like TJs, Target etc. She lives in the dorms. Has an expensive concert habit which she pays for from savings unless I’m feeling especially generous.

None. We pay for tuition, room and board, transportation, and books. She uses money from her summer work and part time campus job to cover extras.

I was given $100 monthly back in the 00's. I'd say $500 tops. $1500 is way too much, especially since she spends it all.

Not all of them, I’m quite sure, but even if some do, there’s a big difference in helping your young adult to afford housing costs (whether as a student - as most responders indicated they are covering room and board already - or as someone in their first years on the job market) and giving them hundreds of dollars in play money every month.

I don’t spend $1500/month on myself, much less each of my college kids. This is insane. My kids get $1000/semester and have never spent it all.

Nothing. Meals and housing and textbooks are paid through the colleges, we pay for plenty of clothes on break, and anything else they can cover with their summer earnings and savings from high school.

Mine gets $800/mo. She typically spends less than half and the other half goes into her investment account. We add a bump to the investment account depending on how much she saves.

We pay for everything not covered by the merit scholarship. My kids don't have to spend a dime.

They are frugal kids, hang out with other nerdy/frugal kids, and till date their spending habits has been very modest.

Is this post a joke? A throwback? I remember one like this from years ago. If it’s real, and you all have that much money, give more to DC Mission or Habitat or House of Ruth or Bread for the City or Tommys Pantry. You could do some real good rather than spiiling very able and well-resourced young adults. This is nuts.

Yes, $1500 per month is a lot of money. But let's imagine she spends $250 per week on food (door dash or takeaway once per day, after tax and tip).

Then, it's $500 per month left: that's one set of highlights OR one pair of designer jeans, plus concession money at football games and ubers home from off campus parties.

So, OP, have a conversation with her about her budget. My guess is that she is going to spend every cent you give her. If you expect her to save/ have money for emergencies, discuss where she can reduce her spending.

PP: to be clear, I think it's crazy for a college student to be spending $350 per week on food. But some of them -- including many of the rich ones -- do. I think $200 jeans are not a necessity but many 20 years olds disagree. If OP's kid is hanging out with friends who have NO budget and can spend whatever they want each month, the DD needs to be made aware of her own family's situation and limits.

I have 2 girls, and no, they do not. Mine would never do this. They thrift, TJ Maxx or even Costco. It's jeans. Good grief.
