How much do you give your freshmen DD in allowance per month?

We pay tuition, room and board, textbooks, flights home, groceries and once a month I’ll order a nice meal to be delivered. No additional money given. My kids use income from summer jobs and their own investments pay for everything else.

$1,500 is more monthly play money than I get as an adult. I can’t imagine giving a teen that much.

Thats what I was thinking!

I don’t spend that in a year on hair and nails.

This is a LOT for a college student.

My DD in Boston gets $400/month and it is plenty. Your daughter should spend her own money on things like manicures. We do cover necessities as well like pharmacy meds.

Yes you did

How so?
She has $$$$$ waiting for her in trust, so what does it matter, really?

Wow, i make seven figures and spend freely, but i don't think i spend $1500 a month on myself. I would have to invent stuff to spend on to go through that.

My DD is in her own college apt in NYC - food, utilities and a few outings with friends is easily 1200-1500 a month. Some kids at her school get much more.

Nobody is counting day-to-day food and utilities. Everyone has said they are paying basic food/meal plan and housing costs, and are talking about “play money” above and beyond regular living expenses. If you take out regular groceries (not dining out) and utilities, how much of that 1200-1500 is spent in “a few outing with friends”? That’s the comparable figure.

So far, since August she’s spent all of it each month and doesn’t have anymore left by the end of the month. Our older kids, all boys, got the same amount of money, but there was always a lot left over every month. To me, $1500 is more than enough so, I believe she’s overspending. How much is your DD getting per month?

We do $75/day

My DC gets $200 per month for "extras." They're on a full meal plan, and we pay for books, supplies, necessary equipment, etc. $1500 per month on top of all ordinary expenses is completely insane. This can't be true.

I feel like parents of kids applying to college should be warned about schools where the social norm is for kids to go out on the town and spend money.
