FCPS is turning the new high school purchased to fix crowding into an Aviation magnet school instead of a high school??

The Education committee of the Fairfax Federation is meeting with Reid next month. They have a meeting at Gatehouse prior to that (at least I think that is what it says.)

Wait they want to make it another GOVERNOR'S SCHOOL? Would it be just part of the school, like some of the other academic year governor's schools, or are they really recommending we create a second TJ that takes the entire building??

It's an endeavor to avoid base school boundary changes. Elephant in the room is open capacity at Herndon HS. Similar to what MacKay called open capacity at Mount Vernon prior to the BOS approving the West Potomac expansion for a bond referendum. Surf the Fed of Citizens association site for names, look up addresses where possible, FCPS committee or BRAC membership. Eastern FX has Edison Global STEM [ how did it end up there and not Lewis?] so there's not a comp product in the western part of the county. https://edisonhs.fcps.edu/sites/default/files/media/inline-files/GSCP%20FAQs%2011.2022_0.pdf

3 years full time, 90/grade, transfer, no transportation, senior year transfer reg or apply for IB. That letter is NOT about a 60 [2 classrooms] or 90 [3 classrooms] program co-existing with the base school POS.

JFC, not everything is about great falls, lady.

PPdidn’t say anything about Great Falls, only that at some point questions are going to be asked about how much money FCPS should spend on KAA when Herndon has hundreds of empty seats. At one point a while back some Board of Supervisors members expressed concern over all the money getting spent on West Potomac when Mount Vernon had seats, but nothing came of it.

Ironically, FCPS won’t make the relatively modest investments needed to expand some crowded schools but they are fine with much bigger projects like expanding West Potomac all the way out to 3000 seats and now buying KAA. There is absolutely no rhyme or reason to how FCPS operates.

Someone with a vested interest is pushing this hard and spent a lot of time compiling all those documents. There is no community demand for this and there never was a need or plan for it. Ever since the new school fell in their lap there has been someone or some group planting seeds on how to make sure it didn't get used as a community school.

I think they probably had people within FCPS writing up hypothetical scenarios like this years ago as part of their Gatehouse jobs. Kind of like newspaper reporters who write obituaries before someone dies. Then when KAA fell in their lap they dusted off their “aviation academy” idea and made it part of the upcoming presentation.

There’s no idea too stupid for Reid to present because her basic style is to chide anyone who doesn’t share her penchant for “imagining the possibilities.”

Research school board member Kyle McDaniel and "aviation"

Then come back and let us know what you think about the aviation academy plan

Dulles Airport was in/near western Fairfax for a long time before Kyle McDaniel started his rinky-dink flight business.

Then why are almost all the documents posted on Board Docs for the August 26 work session about FCPS plan to make the new high school an Aviation magnet? The plans are quite detailed, down to specific curriculum. There are multiple documents posted in board docs by FCPS outlining the detailed plans. The plans already discuss their chosen corporate sponsors (Amazon for example) not simply a general statement of how they are going to set up bidding for corporate sponsors.

It sounds like our school board reps need to familiarize themselves with Board Docs.

The plans talk about an Academy program.

Right. But the school board member she called said there is no discussion about turning the new school into a magnet school.

It is all right there in board docs, and very well planned out.

The school board reps need to familiarize themselves with board docs. How on earth can any of them claim ignorance?

And there are other schools like this in the country. People need to take off the tinfoil hats.

"Be a magnet school" and "include an Academy program" are not the same thing. If that conversation actually happened, the SB member could have been perfectly truthful and accurate in saying that it won't "be a magnet school". Doesn't meant it can't have some academy program, the same way a bunch of other (non magnet) FCPS schools already do.

Can we all wait till tomorrow to see what happens? These look like just ideas, a full discussion and a vote has to happen.

As long as no one knows what the capacity of this school would be as a public HS, it’s ridiculous for FCPS even to be talking about an academy program. None of the materials for the work session actually address the building capacity. The smaller the capacity, the odder it would be to use the space for an academy program that would likely be space-intensive. Not to mention that putting an academy program at the school undercuts the argument that the purchase was necessary to relieve overcrowding in the immediate area.

The utter incompetence of Michelle Reid when it comes to rolling out anything new in FCPS simply cannot be overstated.

Being lemmings never serves anyone’s interests in FCPS besides those of Gatehouse and the School Board.

If you are familiar with the history of FCPS, once it makes the public Board docs it is basically a done deal.

This one is way too detailed not to be in it's late stages, particularly since Board Docs says that the Aviation school will begin August 2026, less than a year from now.

They would have to have the program finalized and application process created like this month.

This thing is most likely in it's final stages.

Someone needs to FOIA McDaniel roll in this, especially given his current lawsuit.

Even the Lewis Leadership Academy took 2 full years to implement from idea to the first enrollment.

Acadmy program and magnet school are different concepts. Academy program are vocational education. Magnet school are for advanced learners.

The materials talk about starting with 9th and 10th grade, so they could start with those classes in a regular school and then layer the academy program on top later.

It still is unclear what the numbers will look like. It's sad that, at a time when FCPS can't even take care of the basics close to competently, they are playing around with ideas for fringe programs.

You responded to my elephant in the room of Herndon HS. The fact is the KAA site never should have left the inventory of public land zoned for a school. Saudis 1st rented Dunn Loring then the original Mount Vernon HS. We're pleased it's back especially with a building and FCPS could use the capacity at the KAA site for a base school and the Herndon expansion for more base school students [note planned expansions at Dranesville, Armstrong, undercapacity FE-Colvin Run?] plus adding Russian and a small STEM academy.

Yes there have been individuals in boundary for the Langley pyramid squawking on KAA and I am not one of them. Any other implicit KAA purchase complaints? FX Fed is on BRAC and a FFM BRAC rep raised self-perceived KAA issues.
