They list 2 objectives.. over crowding still manages to be second for a school whose express purpose was to address overcrowding. FCPS continues to be an out of touch embarrassment. |
I am a Xfield parent with kid currently at Oakton, and I would LOVE for him to be able to go to KAA instead. |
Oh that trustworthy school board. Definitely believe anything they tell you.. |
And they’re going to try something they haven’t done before at KAA at the same time as they continue to mismanage the county-wide boundary study, when creating new KAA boundaries along with fixing Coates ought to be at the forefront of that study. They are so utterly ridiculous. |
Good for you. I am a Xfield parent who like Oakton's stability and past performance, but not completely object to KAA because its state-of-art facility. However it could be quite disconcerting to send my kids to an unpredictable environment without established staff and procedures. So I'd rather stay with Oakton if I had to chose. But if my kids were K-3 I would not mind wait and see. |
Good grief. But, it is the elephant in the room. A couple of people on this thread have demeaned the KAA purchase because of space at Herndon. They seem to think that kids in this area could fill those spots--when, in reality, Herndon High School is on the opposite side of Herndon from this area and it would be an extremely long bus ride at rush hour. It doesn't help that some of the biggest complainers on Nextdoor live less than 3 miles and less than 10 minutes from Herndon but are zoned for Langley. That doesn't bother me, but please don't attack the ability of the KAA area to get their own school. |
And, change start times while they do boundary changes and add 6th to Middle School? What could go wrong. My suggestion: just like Science of Reading. Let's get back to basics. |
The superintendent is likely inspired by the wildly successful aviation magnet high school in Tukwila south of Seattle. I imagine that for FCPS, a successful aviation magnet program would help fill the school, especially as proximity to nearby high schools may make it hard to fill and draw boundaries. |
LOL! The locals want this school. They will have plenty of kids to fill it. Chantilly is closest --but FCPS School Board says there are too many kids there. Also, too many at Westfield and too far away for the neighborhood.. South Lakes is pretty full, too. Some kids are on very long bus rides to Oakton and Oakton is filling up. The only school in close proximity is Chantilly--which is the most crowded school in FCPS. |
When they moved part of Chantilly to Oakton - the move that led to the Chantilly parent assaulting Kathy Smith years later - Herndon did not have hundreds of empty seats.
Move that Oakton area back to Chantilly, part of Chantilly to Westfield, and part of Westfield north of 50 to Herndon. Then they can turn KAA into an aviation academy, or a culinary/hospitality academy, or whatever else they decide given the building’s likely capacity constraints. |
So many unpopular ideas in one sentence. |
Yes. None of those ideas make sense for the students who live in the area. Some people really don't wan5 5his area to have a school that meets their needs. They also must not be familiar with the area I think I know what 5heir goal is. |
They have fiduciary duties. Not all their decisions have to be popular. |
DCPS tried to open a hospitality magnet high school for years downtown, and it never took off since it was a very unpopular idea with families, despite the slick powerpoint presentations and brochures. |
By the times your little one reaches high school, years in the future, the "top" and "stable" high schools could be very different. As anyone who has been in FCPS for years with older kids can tell you, it only takes 1 year plus 1 principal change to throw a wrench into any well run school. |
