Because not everyone wants to go to UVA. Many reason for this, major, financial, size, location.

No, just not interested. |
+1. My senior just isn’t interested and top choice is a school out of state that is actually comparable in cost. That’s where he’s applying early to. |

I think it's silly to suggest that every student in VA is an idiot for not applying to UVA ED. There are some students who have a legit shot at a higher ranked school and it makes more sense strategically to apply there ED. For others, there's no chance of getting in ED and throwing an ED application at UVA is wasting an ED application at a more realistic school.
But if you're at the sweet spot it probably does make sense to do it. UVA gets so much flack on this board and it makes no sense. The only explanation that I can give, and I hate to say it, is jealousy. We live in a competitive area. DCUM is an extremely competitive website. Parents frequenting the college forum on this website are even more competitive. Many live or die for their kids to get into a "name" college. UVA is certainly a "name" college. It's certainly a hard admit. And once you're in, and in state, it's a bargain price. Combined, this makes it a very desirable school on DCUM. And that leads to jealousy. |
| If you're newer around here, you don't recognize the posting style of the person egging you on. They aren't a UVA parent. They are just trying to piss you off. |
I'm the poster you are responding to, and I am talking about in-state kids. I know students who were accepted to Yale, Dartmouth, Georgetown, and Northwestern but ended up at UVA. They did not want to go to UVA. They desperately wanted to attend the other schools, but ultimately, couldn't afford it. All of them eventually ended up happy with their UVA experiences. I also know some kids who wanted a smaller liberal arts experience but didn't feel that William & Mary was a good fit. However, once their parents realized how expensive SLACs are, they ended up at UVA. This isn't a dis against UVA. Their reasons for not wanting to go there were often silly ("I will see too many people from my high school there") or wanting to be unique in their college choice. I think these kids are nuts. I'd be thrilled if one of my kids ended up there. |
And to clarify, I don't think they are nuts for wanting to go to the other schools. I understand that, but what I think is nuts is the idea that you're "settling" for UVA. It's a great school! Ultimately, they all seem to end up loving UVA after a while. |

DD wanted a liberal arts college (no not W&M, a real one). We could afford it and beloved she’d do better in an academic environment she liked. We were 100% correct and she adores Williams.
Really, at her hs, students didn’t want to attend uva, they ended up there because of finances or not getting into better schools. It’s a great college for many kids Charlottesville is the antithesis of what they want |

I'm curious why everyone thinks that UVA is so inexpensive for in state? Just dropped my first year engineering major off yesterday and our COA for this year is $50K+
Compared to flagship public schools in neighboring states, this is way higher. Although I love VA schools in general and I'm thrilled to have my kid at UVA, I think the COA for in-state students overall is very disappointing as compared to public universities in other states. Although I guess compared to many comparable privates and OOS publics, it is less expensive. |
Engineering is uniquely expensive the first year at UVA. Arts and Sciences is $40k, by comparison. Still more expensive than many in-state publics to be sure, though not entirely unprecedented. And less than half the COA of many privates. |
| I don't get the hype at all, but I'm from the west coast. |
Because it’s a great school. Virginia residents are very fortunate to have multiple solid choices. |
My kid is a second year at UVA. Parents tend to round up COA for Arts & Sciences at 40k. Our COA is more in line with 34-36k including the more expensive dorms (Balz Dobie and Gaston). |
It most definately makes sense to look beyond that if you want a Smaller school and many majors. I'm not sending my kid to UVA for engineering, especially if they'd prefer a school with only 4-8K undergrads (that also means VaTech is out). those 3 are great schools and yes if you don't have the finances for privates, then consider ED to one of them. But there are plenty of privates where you can get what your kid wants and get merit. My kid had CWRU only costing ~$40-45K/year a few years ago . Much better experience for them than any of those 3, and for basically the same cost. |
