Stealing has become so blatant that people who wouldn’t steal see so many people stealing and think- why am I the sucker who is paying for things. It becomes a slippery slope as more and more people steal.

So many people start rationalizing how it isn’t a big deal to steal. That kid is going to go to school thinking it’s fine to steal at school and other places too.

People also think- who cares that the store doesn’t get paid since it’s a corporation. The issue is the executives and shareholders are still making money, they just raise prices so that honest poor and middle class people suffer.

Dealing with the general public is just too much at this point. People behaving badly, people confronting them, it's all just hard to take. I have taken to just listening to audiobooks and drowning it all out. I can't even imagine mustering this much emotion over a hot bar.

I had to enter a FTA bench warrant the other day for theft under $100 for a stolen Gatorade and chips. It was less than $10. But the store wanted to press charges. It’s so much work, time, and money wasted.

I get what you’re saying. What is happening in reality is that as a consequence of these “petty” crimes not being prosecuted, stores are instead choosing to just shut down that location entirely since the theft gets out of control and cuts into their profits.

I’ve seen Walmarts, Publix, Walgreens,CVS, Dollar Trees leave areas where petty retail thefts are not prosecuted. These stores take their jobs, wages and resources with them when they vacate, leaving big gaps in the local community. That leads to higher crime for these areas, which cause law enforcement more $$$$ and time.
